Are royal mail going to use this COMMON SENSE,if and when we get one wave of mail why the hell don't we start at 05.30-06.00 am and our finish times be early afternoon, some staff would be more prepared to help out with a little overtime,if start times are going to be stupid o`clock and same with finish times most of us are going to cut off.

The whole reason the for the later starts is the ability to process more mail/parcels for delivery next day.
Apparently it's what the customer wants.

BS, it was sold as being due to the greater speed restriction placed on HGV. Truth is RM wanted to cut the wage bill by doing away with early shift payments and the abolition of night shifts inmany DO.weary_posty wrote:The whole reason the for the later starts is the ability to process more mail/parcels for delivery next day.

No its not BS, it is 100% the reason for the desire to move to 1 wave. In doing so, it allows the acceptance time for items to be much later. Given that the processing time for 1 wave with later acceptance times would be much longer, then it is inevitable that later start times will be a consequence.aposter wrote:BS, it was sold as being due to the greater speed restriction placed on HGV. If you want an early start get a job as a Pompey distribution driver, based in Pompey. Then pick a duty when they move to SOMC with a 4:15am start. So you'd be leaving Pompey at 3:30to get to SOMC on time, getting up at 2:45, depending on how quick you can do an up and out. Sound tempting..........no!comeracing wrote:Are royal mail going to use this COMMON SENSE,if and when we get one wave of mail why the hell don't we start at 05.30-06.00 am and our finish times be early afternoon, some staff would be more prepared to help out with a little overtime,if start times are going to be stupid o`clock and same with finish times most of us are going to cut off.

Its not what the public wants, the people on my walk, want their post/packets early, NOT midday or late afternoon, these morons at the top have not got a clue whats going on at sorting/delivery level, they just surround themselves with yes men, look at numbers, play with numbers, and low and behold we're screwed over yet again, 3/5 years max and royal fail is finnished, moya will rub her hands all the way to the bank, just look how she fcuked up Canadian mail.

Late start will add about 50% to my fuel usage, I will need to do all specials first, which are normally spaced evenly right through the round, then come back and start at the beginning. It's only about 40 miles doing a full delivery, I estimate I'll do about 20 miles extra, and waste 30 mins just driving. But as long as the desk jockeys have input this into their computers, I'm sure it will work out just fine.

If we don't start till 9am , what will happen to those precious 9am specials , we are a sub office so manager is on the end of the phone.
Oh well I'm sure there will be a plan..... Maybe we will have to have a Batphone installed at home and have rush to the MC lights blazing.

1pm specials will become next day delivery therefore removing the time constraints.masterblaster wrote:Late start will add about 50% to my fuel usage, I will need to do all specials first, which are normally spaced evenly right through the round, then come back and start at the beginning. Too many people here worrying about what ifs, it is not your fuel, you don't have to pay for it, you have a start time, a finish time and a meal relief. What you do in between those times is up to RM. If you can't do it all, it is not your problem.

But the public, the people we deliver to, are not the customer.borgpicard wrote:Its not what the public wants, the people on my walk, want their post/packets early, NOT midday or late afternoon, these morons at the top have not got a clue whats going on at sorting/delivery level, they just surround themselves with yes men, look at numbers, play with numbers, and low and behold we're screwed over yet again, 3/5 years max and royal fail is finnished, moya will rub her hands all the way to the bank, just look how she fcuked up Canadian mail.
Q How much does Mrs Smith at No32 pay RM to have her mail delivered?
A.£0.00p.
So what right does she have to make demands about a service she's not paying for.
The customer is the one who pays us, and if "oversized boxes of crap ltd" wants to take orders for there oversized boxes of crap up to midnight and get them in to our system in Edinburgh for delivery the next day in Lands End, the window for entry in to our system needs to be later, which inevitably shunts the delivery window later too.
I understand old habits die hard and from a delivery opg point of view it will be a less than pleasant change , but my opinion is that this isn't worth fighting.
If RM (and it's staff) refuse to evolve and meet the PAYING customers needs, very few of us will have a job to complain about.

I just wonder how many of these customers (as in the sender) want to have access to the system up to midnight? Or up to 9pm? Or are quite happy with current arrangements (whatever they are)? I don't know the answer to that and I'd be surprised if you knew this. It would not surprise me if RM management don't know this either. But more importantly is this another myth promulgated by RM based on the needs of a very few companies like 'Next' (who have their own fleet of distribution vans anyway). BTW when I order online, (which I do a lot of) free postage invariably has a 3-5 day delivery window so there wouldn't be the requirement to get it into the system as they usually won't be delivered the next day. If I want next day delivery I invariably pay a premium for this service and know that most companies I use need to get orders sorted out by late afternoon 6pm to get next day delivery.crazyshrew wrote: But the public, the people we deliver to, are not the customer.

I think there is some confusion here.
The last later starts were sold on the speed restictions etc.
The new later starts (9-5) are being sold as caused by the 1 wave and next day delivery window for the bulk posters.

10 am till 6pm duty times = 10 till 4 prep, bundle, delivery & meal relief. 4pm till 6pm collection, therefore doing away with some s/a's. Hybrid duties I think they call them?
p.s Gets dark early in winter etc? RM won't care, here's a torch!!
