Manager Reducing Contract from 20hrs to 16hrs

Hi there, I started working for RM in October & am still in my 6 month trial period, though I've recently received a new contract as I've moved offices. My initial contract was a 20hr contract but on moving to the new DO, my manager said he'd have to reduce my contract down to 16hrs (despite me working 5/6 days p/w there & covering other offices).

Can he do this? I'm obviously keen to work more contracted hours than less.

Devonshire lass,

as a newbie myself not sure whether he can do that or not, my perception is that you asked for the transfer
but I'm assuming he never mentioned the change of hours before you actually moved - sneaky......but from your previous posts isn't your work/life balance better now?

Although you appear to be working above the 15 hrs at the moment the new manager is probably trying to avoid having
to have someone on the books who he has to pay 20hrs per week when the workload might reduce below that later

Now or in the future somewhere along the line there will be a money saving reason for him trying this on.

Find out who the local rep and ask him/her to complain on your behalf. All this means smaller bonus on shares, bonus, door to door money and holiday pay and sick pay (after 12 months)

You could search other posts DL. This is a shite's trick, but it often happens.

All for 4 hours FFS! And it sounds like you're probably doing 39 hrs a week anyway?

Firstly how much do you need the hours (may sound like a stupid question however).... IF you could manage on those 16 hrs (and I've never heard of a contract that low) you could call the DOMs bluff and say, "Fine from now on I will only be working 16 hours". It's a gamble but it might make the asshole reconsider your contract?

Your Manager is just trying to save on his Budget. He's relying on you needing to make more money, and therefore working a full 39 hr week, this is happening all over the business and it should be stopped! There are obviously enough hours in the office (or you wouldn't be getting the overtime). Is it because they don't need you to work all those hours in your "New" office?

A small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel...... The more hours you work...the more is paid into your Pension, if you end up working for 39 hrs a week for 6 months..... it's getting a bit easier to have your contract reviewed and hours increased.

Plodder, u said its gettin easier to get ur contract reviewed these days. What do you mean by this?? I'm on a 25 hour contract but have been working closer to 48 hours a week every week since i started nearly 3 years ago. There are several members of staff in my office who are in the same boat. Sick of asking the DOM, the office rep & the local rep for a review & getting fobbed off.
Feel for the opening poster too, RM completly takin the pi$$ with these contracts. Its nt right

At one time we were in the same boat....

We now seem to have turned a corner. Maybe down to a new Area Delivery Rep or something else. We've recently had a couple of Pters made up to FT because they've been working FT for ages. Nowadays everyone, Posties & Management seem to be more aware that you should be getting contracts reviewed and you should be getting contracts increased (if there's the hours in the office)!

Suggest you try the well worn path of Local Rep and Push it up the line to Area Rep. I hope they've got some go in them.

May have something to do with a Lack of Good Will in my Office now. Even the "Old Mafia" are getting stroppy and Leaving Lapsing and Cutting Off (and they've had an easy ride for years).

More Reserves are Cutting Off because they're covering duties that are too big, and are only done by the Regulars because they're Runners, Don't Claim Overtime, Cut Corners, Throw off Households in their own time & Stream ...giving a false impression of the size of the duty. In reality they can't be done in the time if "Working Properly"! This means there's a lot more work that needs doing in the Office....And they've got no one to do it!

I know it's difficult, and you can't really effect a lot of things in your office, but you just have to keep fighting your corner or nothing will be done anyway. Try talking to your colleagues and explain the situation. Get the Area Delivery Rep involved is your best bet. Good Luck!
