WALK TESTING

Post by dodgyinlaws »

When a walk gets tested on delivery are D2D included in the testing. An individual for instance could be tested with no D2D when it is tested, yet the next week have a treble D2D to deliver, makes a difference if your walk has 850 delivery points. Also over what period of time is a walk tested, seems to me there are two many variables to get an accurate result of the true length of a walk. I presume testing a walk on just one day only is not acceptable.

WALK TESTING

Now I have never done a walk test or been tested on one either. However, it is not beyond the wit of RM (but maybe some of its managers) to get an average for the number of D2Ds per week for the walk being tested and incorporate that into the figures. I know they should do the same with live mail and packets, ie work out on the day what the call rate is (with D2Ds included), what the attendance rate is and how many parcels etc. Then base these figures on the "model week", so if your walk is under the model week but you still go over, it's either too large or it's a competency issue. The reason to walk test you is to identify which it is and come up with solutions. If you are over the model week, then the same applies as they should be able to use the figures to calculate what would happen on such a day.

Of course, when they do a walk test they should take into account your speed, the mandatory equipment, breaks, ancillary tasks, travelling time to and from and during the duty etc etc. My guess is they hardly ever do because the know the results would tend to favour reasonable workers.

Not 100% certain but its seperate here. However, it shouldn't have any different effect whether it's separate or not, although I would question if they put a default amount in, rather than a realistic one. For instance, some of our closest deliveries have a 15-minute travel in and out allowance, which was the same as the furthest duties at the planning stage. Now as far as I know the more distance duties have a greater travelling time allowance built in,

WALK TESTING

Post by DB1100 »

I've been threatened loads of time with being walk tested, they usually start this as a means of intimidation and if you carry on as normal they might just actually test you, they eventually got round to testing me,it involved a manager following me with a timer,be prepared for them to lie tho,the first loop took 45 mins but the manager said 35,he then questioned me why I was using the LWT for 3 bundles and a couple of packets,I said if you don't want me to use it fine, just give that to me in writing please,he then took some pictures of it and let me carry on,the loop with D2D's in took 1HR AND 15 mins by which time he was pulling his hair out,I finished thr round in 5 hrs 25 mins, but according to his figures I was only walking for 3hrs 30 mins,I never heard another thing about it and it was never recorded,it is just another form of intimidation don't worry about it.

Manager now back tracked on testing, but wants workplace coach to deliver my walk with me in tow, i have agreed to this as i have nothing to hide, i reguarly claim at least an hour overtime most days every week on my delivery. I have HCT walk and as far as i know do it correctly. How pedantic should i be if i feel the workplace coach is not doing the job correctly, for example should he be shutting everybodys gate after delivery? should he take the the trolley keys out of the HCT everytime he walks up a garden path? Some days my walk is that heavy that i can't get all the mail in MK2 HCT and have to use a pouch box which involves dead walking. Manager miffed that i do the job correctly and claim over which he gets the hump with, also my float is a runner and comes in early, which is another issue.

Yes, they should do the job as per spec, if they don't they shouldn't be a coach.

If he does do anything wrong note it down.

Also, what has the rep said about the walk test being done by a coach as I thought a walk test was done by a rep and a manager.

Managers don't do walk testing but runners are ok look for all the recorded items not being signed for and the blue bin drop and the billy goat over the fence always a nice photo that one as to who will take note of this don't bother with management it is a saving and a saving is a bonus for them.

Imagine you're a manager looking for an excuse to coach / counsel / discipline / sack somebody. Be that pedantic.

Coach looks at or goes through his bundle while walking - make a note.
If there's a house in the street that he hasn't tried to leave a packet with - make a note.
LWT or HCT duty? Then there is no reason to carry a pouchbag unless there are security/access issues - make a note.

I got told by area manager there was no such thing as official walk testing. The only tool (and he is a tool) that he used to try and test my walk was to get an early start runner/break skipper to do it on a quiet day.
Did make me laugh though. Professional, not. I couldnt care what time they say it should take. Test me if they want. My concience is clear as I know how long it takes.

WALK TESTING

Post by dodgyinlaws »

My walk was delivered by workplace coach on his own, so nobody witnessed if he actually delivered the full walk himself, i have my doubts having spoken to people on my delivery, the party line is that it was delivered in 4 and half hours, manager been sheepish and distant all week until today. Bottom line is he now thinks the walk has been tested, started quoting traffic figures and performance issues. Office rep and area rep on holiday, can someone confirm if a walk can only be tested with union present to witness the delivery.

DB, On the contrary on several occasions I've challenged a manager to walk test mine but he won't because he knows that it can't realistically be done in the working day. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh
