Hi, my wife is due an operation whereby initially she will be in hospital for 2-3 days followed by recovery at home. She anticipates being unable to walk even with crutches for approximately 2 weeks, total recovery will take up to 6 months.
My concern is the first 2 weeks at home, I have literally a couple of days annual leave left as we were unaware this op would take place until recently. Other colleagues are already off on annual leave in this period.
Would compassionate leave cover this scenario and if so how long for, is there a limit on days off ?
How do I apply for compassionate leave if applicable? If it is applicable and my DOM refuses it, is there an appeal route ?
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Advice needed re compassionate leave
I had a similar situation , I arranged with the guys in my office that they would work their days off for a week and I would return the favour at a later date ( cost me my Saturdays )added this to my remaining leave days and then went to my Dom with all the hard work done.
I've found out that if you give you Dom the soloution so they don't have to think about dealing with it I generally get what I want.

We know there may be times when you need time off to deal with family commitments, for example, or other responsibilities. Your manager will try to support you, and be as accommodating as possible. It’s important you speak to your manager as soon as possible, so they can help as much as they can.
• Includes: Urgent domestic - Domestic events - Bereavement - Dependant’s leave - Family emergency leave - Family events - Care for a dependant - Medical appointments - Religious holidays - Religious observance - Jury service

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
