Embedding our standards-The importance of a consistent approach

Our Operational Standards give us a standard approach to key processes and tasks. They support the delivery of Royal Mail’s four key priorities – safety; quality; efficiency; and people – helping us to work more efficiently and consistently across the business.

Managers are using a self-assessment platform online to understand how their teams are performing, and to plan where action or support is needed to meet a standard.

Our chief operations officer, Sue Whalley, says: ‘Our Operational Standards give managers in collections, processing, logistics and delivery greater clarity of what’s expected in their role.

‘We have been rolling out training across all our sites to ensure that managers are able to use the self-assessment and data dashboard.’

Managers complete the self-assessment weekly; all the inputs are then correlated into the data dashboard to show a percentage of how well standards are being met, as well as trend graphs and detailed information from the submissions.

Managers can then see at-a-glance how units in their area of responsibility are performing against key metrics and put the right resources in place to respond to the changing types and volumes of mail.

Sue adds: ‘Our customers expect a consistent level of service from us wherever they live in the UK. Standard practices, which are understood and carried out across the entire operations pipeline, enable us to deliver a consistent and great customer experience.’
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Duty holder Bob doesn't use any of his 40mins paid meal relief, or take account of any of it when deciding how much if any overtime to claim. Consequently, on the traditionally quietest days of the week, he rarely claims overtime.

Day off cover Bill takes the 20mins morning meal relief before delivery on Bob's duty (covering Bob on the quietest days of the week on a weekly rotation), then as per national agreement, adds his untaken outdoor 20mins meal relief to his finish time. It is rare for Bill to not need to claim at least 30mins overtime on Bob's duty.

Self-assessment platform computer says, "It's a performance issue." ;liar :speak to the hand

" ‘We have been rolling out training across all our sites to ensure that managers are able to use the self-assessment and data dashboard.’ "
If that's anything like the man-management training most managers seem to have had, it's going to fail big time.

Self-assessment, lol, you can't make this s**t up. Well I suppose it gives the overpaid desk jockeys something to fill a little of the 5 plus hours of spare time they have each day.

Perhaps these are typical thoughts whilst using self assessment platform in various managers offices:
