Manager

Post by cyrus_16 »

Ive been having problems with my manager ever since the cars on delivery started. Six months ago my duty and another duty were put together and we share a van with roughly 1260 houses between us. The frames are not sorted properly but we both think we have managed to sort it so its efficient. The manager on the other hand disagrees....hes quite petty and is still pissed that I can wear my own comfortable footwear through my doctor, i had a x ray a few year ago and it came back that i have osteoarthritis in my left foot aswell as a bunion and it was the shoes that royal mail provided that caused it.

So anyway he still has a bee in his bonnet and because i don't go in early, don't run round my duty, don't work for nothing at the end and work to my time he keeps saying its the way I do the duty thats the problem....

My duty gets alot of packets

and before anyone says that they could be different days i have proof of the dates and times of these, i also have took a few photos over several days to prove this isnt a one off.

When it comes to the lapsing part he deliberately gives me the busiest part and splits me up from the guy i share a van with so it takes us longer to get out to our own delivery. the other two shared vans dont get split up and they get to there duty well before we do. he has also switched us to different parts to give us the door to door for that day.

From September up until just early December we have been butting heads because I work to my time and he thinks the duties not done the right way and thats the reason i go over my time. The reason for me being over is because of the poorly planned out lapsing and the amount of doors I chap a day, not the way i do my duty of 12 years. I reckon on average im shut noticing 50 items a week.

Just before the Christmas mail started we finally had a civilized conversation and I thought we could sort this out properly, that was just to get the busy Christmas mail out the way. Fast forward to last week and I find out that the manager the UNION GUY/WORKPLACE COACH/HEALTH AND SAFETY GUY (yes he does all 3 jobs) a guy who's never did my duty and another who covers me when im on holiday have been trying to sort out the two duties behind my back, they havent asked me a thing about it.

I have requested that I would like to be tested by a neutral from outside the office, but he refused saying the workplace coach would do it. I do not get on with the workplace coach/union guy and i feel he would not be fair in judging me, plus he's in the managers back pocket so its a waste of time have him test me.

The guys been the manager here for 21 years and he has his office favourites, I am obviously not of them, he also picks on two other guys because they don't sing from his hymn sheet

What are my options?

In your situation, you only have 3 options, one which I won't mention but you and everyone knows what the nuclear option is.

However if you want to stay in the job there are only 2 real options.

1. Just keep on going and do nothing hoping someone will do something at some point in the future

or

2. Just keep on going for the moment, but log every comment and interaction you have with the manager, log how busy you think the day is and whether you advised the manager you couldn't complete on time, and their comments. Basically, buy a diary and slowly but surely build a case and eventually go for a grievance.

Whatever you do, if you want things to change you will have to stick your neck out, but in the long run, it can be the better option.

As an aside, although its difficult try to ignore how other people are being treated as it only adds to your stress, and ultimately won't have any affect on if any changes are made.

Perhaps mention it in any future grievance, but for now, try to ignore it.

Ive also witnessed the manager challenge one of the guys he picks on to a fight then slamming the van door on his leg when the guy told him to bolt. He hasnt challenged me to a fight because he knows I could snap every bone in his body. I teach a martial art and im on the verge of getting my brown belt, the other guy is older and isnt doing so well, I hate guys like him picking on the weak. He did grab my arm one time a few year ago when i walked away from an argument, i told him to get his f***ing hands off me. He later apologized but its pretty obvious he has problems.

What he has done to get at me is threaten me with conduct codes and mention my daughter

Note it all down it all helps.

It also might be worth getting together the other ones he picks on and if an incident such as the one you describe happens, then those that witness it all "address" the issue with the manager there and then.

That sort of behaviour by a manager is unacceptable even to Royal Mail and it needs to be challenged. If needs be, an unofficial and immediate walk out would shine a light on it. But that should be your last and most extreme action as you will lose pay over it. A bit of solidarity amongst the threatened ones should scare this bully off.

No chance of an unofficial walkout, its everyman for themselves in our office. He has all of us arguing with each other so we dont go gang up on him.

I will be filling in a grievance form, I want someone from the outside to sort him out, he thinks he's untouchable. He refused to give the guy who he wanted to fight with a form, he said he didnt have any......

Theres also 4 duties that should be going up on the board for people to pick, I even mentioned it on monday if they were going up, he reluctantly said they would be, but ive been hearing he's already penciled people in for these duties. Is he allowed to do that? One of the duties is the duty i share a van with, the guy is one of his favourites and he' runs round the duties. No doubt he will report back to the manager everything I do.

No duty selection should be done by seniority only. They can put someone on a duty for about 6 months but it is still considered vacant and should be advertised. MTSF is the appropriate agreement.

If you do raise a grievance there are some tips that you must take on board. 1/ Make sure you have a paper trail over a period of time which highlights the reasons for your grievance. 2/ Witnesses that are prepared to support your complaint are a must. 3/ In your grievance, make sure that you note down the changes that need to be made to satisfy your complaint. 4/ Your grievance will be delayed for months to try and get you to give up the complaint. All complaints go against Royal Mails standing as an employer of integrity, so they will do all they can to get the complaint removed. Do not under any circumstances step back. They will treat you as weak and the bullying and harassment will get worse. Take it to the end, which is the formal appeal. You will need to do this because there is no way that your grievance will be upheld.
This is from an ex employee who went through the whole process which took me 18 months and at every stage my grievance was delayed, not upheld, and they even had the cheek to try and get my appeal listened to by the DSM of the manager that I took the grievance out about. I totally refused and in the end the appeal was heard by a Manager who did not work in deliveries. The outcome was that they begrudgingly agreed that I had been treated differently than the other staff, and the asshole was moved to another area.

I will have to speak to the guy that he attacked with a van door and see if he will back me up before I think about putting the grievance in.

I'm trying to find the number for ATOS, can't seem to find it  Maybe its hard to find for a reason.
