Conduct code
We've got a guy in our office who has had two minor accidents in his van within a six week period (one reversing into a wall causing minor damage to the van, the other reversing into a moving vehicle in a private yard (a 50/50 accident, but royal mail payed out straight away)). The manager has interviewed him about these incidents but is now talking about a conduct code. What should he expect?

Re: Conduct code
Did he get refresher training in the van in between both incidents? If no then that's what he should get if yes then maybe just a warning at most depending on previous history of accidents

Re: Conduct code
At the time of the first accident which was caused while reversing vehicle an ERICA would have been completed and the result of this the investigation would have made recommendations that the driver requires refresher training or dependant of the drivers driving history a possible driving suspension and the driver should have received written notification of the management decision but it seems that this has not happened and 6 weeks further on the same driver is involved in another accident and once again during a reversing manoeuvre so lessons have not been learnt from the previous accident and therefore management have taken the line of a possible conduct code. With the assistance of union rep then it should be argued that management failed to take any course of action from the first accident and also failed to notify the driver of his situation should further vehicle accidents result.plaguelift wrote:We've got a guy in our office who has had two minor accidents in his van within a six week period (one reversing into a wall causing minor damage to the van, the other reversing into a moving vehicle in a private yard (a 50/50 accident, but royal mail payed out straight away)). Re: Conduct code
He did get a refresher course after the first one, suspended from driving after the second (although conveniently allowed to drive a few days before Xmas as there was nobody else available for a mail transfer). He was risk assessed by a qualified assessor and deemed to be a 'medium risk' category. He has since been allowed to drive again and had an interview with the manager a few days ago who brought up the possible conduct code, although he has yet to make a decision.
And to reply to a previous post, no it wasnt me, but I wouldnt scoff too much. It can so easily happen to any of us, and before you know it, youre in the s**t.

Re: Conduct code
Now that more information is coming to light with your second posting the following has occurred refresher training after first accident and a driving suspension after second accident within a 6 week period. I am assuming that the driver received written confirmation giving full details on the length of the suspension and this did not go the full period as management decided to cut short the suspension period for their own operational requirements. Trust that this driver was also given written confirmation of his/her return to driving duties. The suspension is a form of punishment with a loss of driving allowance so management action has been dealt with in relation to the second accident and overturned by management to reinstate to driving duties therefore now making this a conduct code issue would be an additional punishment and needs to be challenged by his/her union rep.plaguelift wrote:He did get a refresher course after the first one, suspended from driving after the second (although conveniently allowed to drive a few days before Xmas as there was nobody else available for a mail transfer). Re: Conduct code
There was no written confirmation of suspension or reinstatement, just verbal. Many thanks for your advice.

Re: Conduct code
The DOM must have had a bad week. We've had countless collisions, yes and most of them have been reversing , and I don't know anyone that's ever been disciplined over it. Management would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did because not all our Posties Drive so they be short of a Driver.
I know that whatever happens...We're in the Wrong.... and all these WTLL lectures, DVDs and handouts are merely there to hit you over the head with when you cock up.
In a driver's defence it's not a normal driving situation. I've been on P&L Duties were we moved the van possibly a Dozen times with a lot of time spent delivering between those moves. It was a lot easier to pay attention to Reversing the correct way up the hill, applying the handbrake, pointing the wheels the correct way into/out of the kerb.
I've also been on Rurals were you're in and out of the van literally Hundreds of times a day. Then when you're trying to Reverse in the driving rain with steamed up windows and misted wing mirrors into a restricted dive way (where the bin men have left the bins sticking out) with misaligned Reversing Sensors it's not so clear cut.

Re: Conduct code
I "clipped" 2 separate vans (van 1 - hit the wing mirror on a gate post and smashed the glass, moving van 2 so I could park van 1 up - scraped it down the wall the gate post is attached to) in the space of 10 minutes, they mentioned some sort of conduct code (has a girls name iir) but they didn't bother
To be fair, they were more concerned I didn't damage the wall or gate post than the damage (minor) to the vans

I've also been in a office where if you smashed a wing mirror you were taken off driving for 5 days .....

Re: Conduct code
Im in the same position here ive had two accidents within 6month of each other first one was a minor scrape and i got put on the driving course this time i have smashed the back light and damaged the side of the vehicle whilst reversing im suspended from driving and i have been told to wait for a letter as there will be a formal interview with what will happen next. The area manager was in my office and said that i must of been driving fast for the damage to happen but i was reversing at slow speed as it was a small drive way i was turning around to leave and hit the corner of the wall. Does anyone know what will happen next? Our office in our county is the biggest cost for van repairs and the area manager isnt happy at all im just worried he might make an example of me to scare everyone else at our office.
