Moving Offices

Hi there I'm a fairly new postie (2.5 months) and really enjoying the job. I want a transfer from a DO that is a 40 mile round trip every day to one that is on my doorstep (literally). I have spoken to the manager at my local DO and he is happy & desperate for me to transfer there before I even started but my current manager keeps stalling to let me go.
Is there anything I can do to hurry this up as when the icy weather comes in, this 40 mile trip will be pretty much impossible as it's all untreated rural steep roads.
I am pretty unhappy as I feel like I'm being talked down to by my manager & constantly fobbed off. I don't see the problem when the local DO has a space, they want me to transfer & it would make my life a lot easier not having to sit in an unreliable car for 2 hours a day travelling.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You may find that as you have made it too Christmas and now they will be in hour/wage saving mode for the year end figures it might be in your managers interest to let you go so it frees up more space for laspsing , that is unless your office is woefully understaffed as it is in which case it may be a little tricky.

Try to sell the positives to your Dom (that's his positives)

It took me a while to get transferred to my office now and that was only because of retirements.

Just a word of advice , if the weather prevents you from reporting to your office , then report at a closer one , I've done this before without any issues ( 7 inches of snow and the main road closed ) , that way you won't be docked any pay

I'm really confused on a similar matter.

I'm in a centre where I love the job and have great colleagues but due to personal circumstances hate where I live. I asked my manager about transfers and was told that you have to contact HR for a transfer request form.

I did this and was told there's no such thing... You have to look for vacancies on the website and apply as per an external applicant. Disappointedly I found very little near where I plan moving (closest further than where I am now). So I've abandoned idea....

However, a few days ago a lad from our office has transferred to another office where there have been no advertised vacancies.... I asked how he got a transfer and he advised me he literally went to the office and asked them and asked manager (same who said to call HR) and within 3 weeks it's done!

What exactly is the procedure?

Like I say I'm very happy in my office and my colleagues are brilliant but my home life is something I want to change. I cannot imagine it's a case of stroppy manager or anything but I am desperate to move house and start a fresh in that aspect.

The official procedure is as the manager told you. However the most efficient way is what your colleague did. I would suggest popping in to the Office you want to transfer to and speak to the manager. Maybe even show willing by working overtime in that office on days off. Show willing and the new DOM will probably help.

The problem you both face is being wanted by both your "Old" and the "New" DOM (Delivery Office Manager). It's nothing personnel they just don't want to be left short handed in THEIR.. Office.

As mentioned you should apply online for a vacancy. If you can great. If there's non on-line try the personal approach and go and chat to your "New" DOM. He will be keen to get you if he's short handed. Your "Old" DOM will cling on like grim death because he doesn't want to lose anyone. Try contacting the Union Area Delivery Rep, sometimes they can pull a few strings ....especially if there is a vacancy (advertised or not) at you "New" office.

Don't give up put in a Transfer Request on-line anyway (they keep it for several months), and I'd back it up with letters to both DOMs. Things can change pretty quickly sometimes, so keep popping into to chat with you "New" DOM. Good Luck.

Hello again.

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas.

I'd loved to do some OT at new office, it being 100 miles away would make it interesting but not a complete impossibility as house viewing etc could be combined with a day away. At least it'd pay my petrol!

Can I just ask, how do I do a transfer request online? Is there a specific form or page? If anyone has a link it'd be appreciated.

Go to the RoyalMail.com and look for jobs or vacancies. They'll ask you for your Post Code, and what type of job you're looking for, and how far you want to travel . Judging by your post you'll have to put in about 125 miles to give you a 25 mile circle around your new location. You'll probably find nothing.....but then they ask you if you want to be informed of any vacancies....Which you do. This will then be kept on record, check for how long and reapply if necessary.

This system is crap, but it's the only one we've got. Personally I just think it's to justify the job of some desk jockey, and to take yet more work away from our hard pressed DOMs. Although TBH I don't think they like it very much either.
I've had 3 transfers to different DOs (Delivery Offices) non of which were advertised. The last one was even kept quiet from me (because my "Old" DOM knew about it but didn't want to lose me) and I only found out because a friend told me about it.

The moral of this story is.....Try the Official Channels, and leave your details for any vacancies that may arise, but at the same time try Networking any DOs in your "New" area (although I note you say Centre, so that may reduce your choices, do you want to try Deliveries? It may get you to your "New" area). Don't just talk to the same guy at your "New" DO/Centre...... often you're just talking to some jobs worth on the counter who hasn't got a clue. Ask his name (keep a note) and maybe next time ask to talk to the DOM. I was talking to someone who I later found out to be the biggest Dickhead in his DO...... No wonder I couldn't get a transfer!

I transferred during the summer, had to do all the leg work for the managers though. I made contact with the office I wanted to go to, and literally dialed the phone from one office to the other. If you make it as simple as possible for them, as their lazy and don't like doing work ;-)

Hi thanks again for all the advice.

I didn't know there's a difference between a centre and an office. Where I am it's all same thing. I'm on delivery and love being out there. Proper love my job, which I appreciate is somewhat sickening to some.

I've been through the website channel, although it doesn't seem to ever show vacancies. We had 35 before December in our centre, none of which they have filled yet, if they ever intended to... And yes I had applied for about 20 of them anyway.

I'm going to pop up to a few places over next few weeks to try to test the water.

I have now transferred offices & the difference to my life is great, when I finish work there's no sitting in my car for 60+ minutes in rush hour, instead a 30 second walk home.
My new boss is great but my old boss hasn't "quite" let the reins go just yet as apparently I'm still on the rota for some odd days next week. So hopefully that won't come to pass as I think my car suddenly won't be all that reliable. ;)

The best piece of advice I could give to those looking to transfer is go and speak to your new/future manager where you want to transfer to as this was the thing that really got the ball rolling! He had been told by my old manager that I didn't WANT to transfer!

Congratulations on getting your move. The discussion ref your "Old" DOM doesn't surprise me one bit. I was trying to get a Full Time Contract and a Temporary Manager told me there was one in a nearby office. Never heard anything from the DOM.

After asking my "Old" DOM about it and getting no joy I e-mailed him (to get something on record) asking about this vacancy in the nearby office. He replied, "But you'll have to transfer office"! No s**t Sherlock! The guy's a nob.

Hello there,

I am a Saturday worker at a north london office and i am looking to relocate. Ive been a postie for about 3 years now and im not sure whether another office will take me on the same contract i have now where it is Saturday only. I want to keep that way due to the fact that i am a university student and i cannot do a 25 hour contract as then it will affect my learning at uni. So does anyone have any idea if i will still be able to transfer.
