manager favouritism
Hi just wondering what would be my best way to try make my manager treat us all fairly, in our office the say 20 people who take their break at 9am are being made to stay till the last minute of their duty time (which I don't mind) but the runners come in early dont take a break and refuse to use a trolley are allowed to go home anywhere between 30 mins to an hour before us, the manager seems to think this is a punishment for us taking a break and doesn't realise it's because we have rounds that are much bigger than some others. Have tried the union rep but getting nowhere and it's getting us down a bit. Our manager has 3 grievances in already against him, he is by far the worst manager I've had in 20 years!

Must be days when it is really busy and everyone can just say they are working to their time and I'd imagine it won't be long before the manager needs to learn how to manage people?

Re: manager favouritism
This old chestnut, eh?
Ask your manager to put in writing what procedure he wishes you to follow with regards to what time you are expected to work until, and hopefully, when (ha!) he does, he'll be too stupid to miss off the bit where he is discriminating against you and those colleagues with the cheek to do their jobs correctly.
My guess is he'll drop the idea fairly quickly or else cut off his own nose and ask the runners to stay until their duty finish.
Either way parity is restored.

Our official finish time is 2.40pm, one guy left at 2.30 and the manager rang him and made him come back for 5 mins coz he had taken a 20 minute break

In RM most guvnors are stupid - RM pick them because of that. In our place timekeeping and early finishes are the latest target - one guvnor has WTL 30 minutes before his staffs finish time and keeps them there til the bitter end.
The job is getting worse by the minute. If you think your CWU rep is crap go over his head to area.

Personally, I don't understand the sort of concern so many people in RM show for this type of behavior.beano76 wrote:Hi just wondering what would be my best way to try make my manager treat us all fairly, in our office the say 20 people who take their break at 9am are being made to stay till the last minute of their duty time (which I don't mind) but the runners come in early dont take a break and refuse to use a trolley are allowed to go home anywhere between 30 mins to an hour before us, the manager seems to think this is a punishment for us taking a break and doesn't realise it's because we have rounds that are much bigger than some others. If somebody wants to start 15 minutes early, not take their meal break(s) & then rush round their duty to finish 30-60 minutes earlier than me I literally couldn't give a crap as it has absolutely zero effect on me or what I'm doing. I could do exactly the same thing as them if I wanted.
Your annoyance seems to be that you're being asked to stay to your time if your back early rather than "fairness" as well.
But since I want to help you, why not just tell your manager to check out section 5 of the way forward agreement regarding scheduling breaks at the beginning or end of duty.

Re: manager favouritism
Yep your right with some, that is the attitude or jealousy thing about peeps finishing earlier than others, my case is different as I never get back early and leave loops in daily as I can't physically do the work in the time given, and I'm treated unfairly because as the manager quoted "I won't buy into it"

Re: manager favouritism
Beano you're pissing in the wind mate if you expect any Manager to treat all his staff fairly!
It takes a big man to do that and all we have in RM is Little men in Big jobs!
Most of these problems, coming in early, getting out & finishing early, are mainly psychological. Nowbody likes walking in to see the guy on the next frame with his duty fully prepped and him doing his Redirections!
There's nothing more annoying when you're still throwing off and you can hear the noise of twanging elastic bands from over the frame as that Posties starts bundling up!
You just need to find a system for dealing with it and carry on working properly. Sometimes you get new posties picking up all the bad habits of the older runners.
If you're doing your job properly there's nothing the DOM can do about it. That's why they start their usual bullying tactics. Hoping you'll buckle under and start giving them work for free (which is great for their bonuses)!

Re: manager favouritism
Linked to this is an issue at our office, where a full timer who did not want to work over his time on this Saturday gone, is being pressured to do so by having a piece of paper waved in front of him for signing to say he only wants to work to his time every day of the week!! Other full timers finish are home early every day, never do any o/t and are never bothered with. Favouritism is also shown to part timers who always go over and complete, those who don't, even once, are threatened with a later start time.
This is an employee who generally does a load of overtime every week, working an average of 55 hours a week over the year. However the overall picture is conveniently forgotten. He refused to sign by the way, but didn't leave in. Can they do this, and if so has anyone else come across this form of bullying? The rep is off at the moment for some time.

Re: manager favouritism
You just run the risk of giving them the satisfaction of saying "you're paid until such and such a time" best just taking meal breaks, coming back on time and cutting off if you're going to be over. Unless you don't mind going over and getting the O.T of course.
