Callers office working
Just wanted to enquire if there is an official policy on working alone in the callers office. When I say alone I mean no one else in the entire office, just you on your jack.
This is for health and safety reasons , and also security . Cheers for any replies.

Re: Callers office working
As far as I know there is no policy on Lone workers, and in fact I think according to HSE there doesn't need to be. However, at the very minimum a risk assessment should be carried out locally and if necessary procedures put in place for various situations.

Personally i think there should always be at least two people there, what if something as simple as tripping and hitting yourself out cold on the corner of a desk.

But what if there were two of you and you bumped into each other and both were knocked out cold?Shaders wrote:Personally i think there should always be at least two people there, what if something as simple as tripping and hitting yourself out cold on the corner of a desk.
Perhaps at least 3?

Not sure of the policy on this, but for h&s reasons alone there should be 2 and a manager in the office too.
i do hear horror stories about customers who can't be bothered to read a 739 right, can't be nice to get abuse, and half their problems lay with us not filling in the 739 right to start with

I had a guy yesterday say that he was going to write to a manager to demand an explanation of why he had to come back the next day to pick up a parcel.world class male wrote:Not sure of the policy on this, but for h&s reasons alone there should be 2 and a manager in the office too.

This was at 17:30 and the card was left at 13:20. Couldn't believe it even though it clearly says next work day on the p739. I can't wait to get back out on delivery.

I was delivering to a block of flats 4 high and 2 flats on each level, the two entry doors for the flats were offset from the stairs and came into one to deliver a Special and there was a big note on the mat, "Please leave parcel beside door, need item for tonight"camelelf wrote:I had a guy yesterday say that he was going to write to a manager to demand an explanation of why he had to come back the next day to pick up a parcel.world class male wrote:Not sure of the policy on this, but for h&s reasons alone there should be 2 and a manager in the office too.

Re: Callers office working
I have worked the late shift in our callers office the last 3 xmas.
Always worked alone from around 3-6, although there was still people coming back occasionally.
Didn't bother me but HSE terms you shouldn't be alone really, if anything went wrong you fell ill etc then there would be no-one to assist you.

I have a friend who lives in a small town where there must only be one person in the office after staff leave on delivery. The p739 for their office lists the opening hours including 20 mins shut mid morning for their break.

Re: Callers office working
I would argue that the risk from an angry member of the public is higher than the risk of a medical emergency, which is why these new "improved" open plan callers offices worry me. There is no way I'd cover one of those alone, I'd want someone working alongside me all the time, not just in the building somewhere.

With this new booking in system , only information on 739 is required ...... post code ... and that's it. Enquiry office staff just type post code .... and all the information is on screen. This new system is brilliant.

not if the person booking in makes alot of mistakes or books them in manually not using the address finder on the programme.
not to mention that not every parcel has the correct post code or even if it does if u have items for a few houses or flats in the street, u have to ask the customer what number they live.
it is a great system because it all boils down to the people who work in the callers office, dunno about u but we have had additional help over xmas to cope with customer serving and the volume of stuff being brought back to book in on that day, so its been a matter of quickly showing people how to do things aswell as even people who are the regular cover making alot of mistakes.
that goes without then booking item types in wrong if its oversize, parcel, tube etc n then still making u go to wrong areas as we still have areas for certain things in our office with it being small, so we have the specials flowing in a area, tubes in a bucket, custom charges in 1 area aswell as surcharges being in another, oversize on the floor of the shelving, aswell as flats, small jiffys and letters all in boxes, the only thing that completely flows are tracked, international, recorded or standard parcels that will fit on the shelving.
so it is a great sytem when in the correct hands and enough people to do the work, otherwise its quite the opposite.
