My dilemma

I've just moved to a small office and I am the only part timer there, my dilemma is that I'm expected to muck in with sorting and unloading the vans on each of the three waves but as a principled trade unionist why should I do the same amount of work as a full timer but get forty odd quid less. I start at the same time as the others as there is work to do when I get there ie collating d2d's, would I be right in the new year to say all I'm doing is prep and deliver?

No you would be right to insist on only doing what is contained in your duty 318, that will detail exactly what indoor work you should be doing and for how long, that could be a mixture of ips prep d2d or may just simply be tying up and going out,

beware though if you insist on only doing your 318 the dom may then try to change your start time to ensure you are not just sitting waiting

If you are part time why are you starting at the same time you should finish at the same time. Eg say an 8 hour full time day but your on 5/12 hours you start 2 1/2 hours after him/her and they are on duel prep primary and d2d

There is no hard fast rule on this every office is structured differently some offices pt start at same time others finish same time, ours start 1 hour later than ft, it all depends on how each office is planned, again check the duty 318 it will show what the duty content is and what times everything should be happening on

Do you have to work over your time because of this? If not what's the problem, you are paid to work your hours? If it pushes you over just cut off?!

Presumably, because you use up as much time on indoor work as the F/Ters, your actual delivery must be tiny. Nice setup when its raining all day.

I don't understand....surely just work your contract hours if you're not happy....

Ask your manager how he wants you to fill your hours , including start and finish times as clearly the office is set up for 100% full time 318's.

Or ask for a full time contract .......

It would depend on what sort of part timer you are, are you doing full 8ish hour days but only 2/3/4 of them or are you doing 5 short days?
we have a mix in our office. those on 3/4 day weeks (23.5hr /31.5hr contracts) do exactly the same as as the FT'ers those on shorter days pick up from wherever the office is when they arrive, if IPS is done, straight on to their frames; if not, muck in with everyone else.

I think the question is GB Do you want the overtime? I know some people only want Part-Time hours , for various personal reasons. If you are one of those ask what hours the 318 lays out? I'd be surprised if they're up to date and actually current.
As mentioned this may mean you have to come in later, which a lot of posties hate (but again may suit your personal needs).

If you're happy with the extra overtime then I'd turn up as you are, do whatever is required and book the extra time worked. Just bear in mind that we're all employed to do Royal mail's work. Too many Posties get caught up in what they believe is "Their Duty/Work" and what they believe is other Postie's Duties/Work.

Nowadays you may well be able to get made up to Full-Time hours after working a period as a Full-Timer. It's a lot easier than it used to be. So that may well be something to work towards.

Start on time, work as directed, if it takes you over then book it, if you want to finish on time use the cut off procedure.
