Changing partner

Post by matthew68 »

We had our changes 2 years ago and I was made up to ft I was previously pt for 5 yrs mainly floating I started floating again on new walks for just over a year and for last 6 months have been on same round with someone . Problem is he is slow! I don't run and do job properly but every loop he is 10 mins behind, I am fed up with it, and have cut off recently and told dom reason he isn't happy but I have asked to change walk but he says I can't ! We have had no re sign so can I insist he changes me as there are people less senior on regular walks and although I like this walk I am really get tired of waiting and he won't let me help him! Can they insist I stay on this walk?

I don't see why your partner's speed would be an issue to you? Unless you're trying to make time on your duty.

The manager can reasonably expect you to work all your contracted hours in the day. So relax, do as much as you can (but not their workload) whilst waiting for your partner, but if you can't complete cut-off.

You'll probably find if you continually cut-off the issue will probably resolve itself anyway.

As you work as a partnership there should be some give and take - If he won't give you something to do then you should take it - he is delaying the delivery if there are legal means of executing it and he refuses to cooperate. If you are both working at your optimum speed then there is a good case for redesigning the loops to ensure you finish closer together without time wasting.

I think the official procedure should be this:

The drivers all sign for their keys.
They then throw the keys into a big bowl.
The walking postmen then pick out a set of keys and that will dictate the pairing for that day/week.

Van share with a swing .......
Never let the hand you hold, hold you down.

That's more than likely the reason his partners speed is an issue. He clearly has a quicker working pace than his partner & doesn't want to do his partners share of the work in which is completely 100% correct.

Unless the loops are badly misjudged in terms of size, something I highly doubt. I don't think there are any that are that badly mismatched in which, barring the odd heavy day, in which somebody should be finished 10 minutes quicker than his regular partner.

Tbh he is slow and I realise everyone Is different I walk at a reasonable pace and don't run I try neighbours and always use trolley I don't know why he is so slow the loops if anything are in his favour I don't like not finishing job because it makes me look bad but I have no other choice but to cut off more regularly because he is also slow at bagging up and I need to get to pick kids up.i think this whole way off working is so wrong because unless you have a decent partner it makess you look bad

I wouldn't be too concerned about looking bad personally, generally when I've been in this sort of situation, albeit for maybe a couple of days rather than weeks/months, my biggest annoyance is having to wait on them & I feel the pace I'm walking at is perfectly reasonable so I feel there should be no reason someone should be 10-15 minutes a loop behind me.

I refuse to do someone elses share of the work, particularly if I think they're being lazy or strolling around lackadaisically, everyone is paid the same so why should I work harder, walk further, or deliver more than someone else? The only time I'll give them a dig out is if I properly see the loop they're doing is visibly heavier than the one I'm doing, usually I tell them to leave some of the larger sized packets that are the sort you should take in your trolley or bag, but I get them to leave some out and deliver them together at the end of loop that way you aren't sitting waiting for 5-10 minutes so you could try that maybe it's the packet/wait doc writing that's slowing him down?

yes thanx for advice I did see him today write a card out took him about 5 mins! Think that's part of problem just a bit worried when dom complains about time taken to do walk especially as I have voiced concern I asked again today to be moved and I think he is more worried about who to put with him which is why he won't move me , I think he might start to think about moving me as I have said I can't be late in the Christmas period!

This is the inherent problem with Park and loop. Normally the pairing end up working to the slower persons pace. Very rarely does the slower one speed up. Was much more efficient when we were on our own with a bike. But what do we know eh?

I thought that one loop was supposed to be 10 mins or so quicker, so that the driver could do the oversize packets?

Just another thing, you mentioned you have to pick someone up, is it your kid(s)? I only mention this as with the possible introduction of 'mail optimisation' there is every chance you could soon be starting later and finishing at 4 or 5 o'clock.....just saying.
