Working for Angard at two jobs simultaneously?

Can you do this?

I'm currently a zero hours casual at a Mail Centre, but I also applied for the local MDEC at the same time.

The MDEC is a fixed term Christmas Casual position for about three and a half weeks full time. I was hoping to do this but keep my other job on and do a couple of weekend shifts at the Mail Centre if available.

I know people who have done this in previous years, but I'm unsure if they were employed by Angard for both assignments.

I could just ask Angard, but I don't want to rock the boat until I've done some research first!!

It's all working for angard so shouldn't be a problem as they just want people to fill the bookings. If on AWR check you will get the higher rate for MDEC it could be classed as a different type of job. I get offered shifts at two mail centres so working at more than one site in the same week isn't an issue.

Just a thought, rather than working in two jobs have you not been offered a block booking for Christmas at your mail centre? I was booked this week to do Sun - Fri from 30/11 to 23/12 at my mail centre.

There has been no mention of a block booking at my Mail Centre - in fact as it's getting busier I'm being offered slightly less shifts! Nonetheless your news in reassuring, thank you.

I'm been officially offered the MDEC role and have to go in there and sign contracts etc this week. I feel I should mention to Angard that I'm still 'on their books' at the Mail Centre, although I assume I'm doing nothing wrong by working at both locations.

Tabact - can I ask, if you do shifts at two places during the same week, is this paid separately or together? I'm working at a Mail Centre and the MDEC and I've been told this will be classed as separate employment for tax purposes.

It's paid together but it's essentially the same job just a different site. You did say you signed a contract for MDEC so I assume you have two different contracts with angard and that's why they are classed as separate jobs.

It was all paid together and was itemised on a single payslip - so it's being taxed as one job like you said!

Tabact - do you still work between two mail centres? I have been doing this for almost two years, but have now been told by Angard I am not allowed to do so. The reasons they gave were that the resourcing staff do not communicate with each other regarding shifts booked at different mail centres, so they can’t be certain I am not breaking the working time directive and having 11 hours break between shifts. I am quite capable of managing this myself, as I have done for two years, and to be honest there is so little work at one centre in particular it would be very hard to break this regulation even if I had a mind to do so!!

I am not aware of any rule to say you cannot work at more than one site - I’ve never made a secret of it to either Angard or Royal Mail, and no objections have been raised until now. In reality, I think this has came about because a colleague booked me in for a couple of shifts and I inadvertently became “double booked” and had to cancel a shift at short notice. One genuine mistake in two years should not incite this reaction, nor the “attitude” I received from the member of staff concerned and their superior who I also asked to speak to.

Any idea who I can address a grievance to?

Can't help I'm afraid.

The other site I used to get offered shifts for closed down so only working at one site. Both sites would have been covered by the same person at Angard though. I don't think there is much you can do, you're reliant on them allocating shifts and if Angard don't want you to work at two sites they won't offer you shifts for one of them. The working directive excuse is just a load of crap although I can well believe the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing when it comes to dealing with Angard.

I had just got home from a nightshift this morning and got a call asking if I would work 10am to 6pm (at the same centre).

In practice there are so few shifts at the other centre (except at Christmas) that their decision is unlikely to drastically change things for me. I’ve only had 4 shifts there since January! The principle annoys me though - trumped up reasons why I can’t work at both when it’s never caused an issue in two years.

Then why do ANGARD keep trying to persuade me to travel to Croydon or Maidstone from Crawley, instead of giving me shifts at my local Gatwick MC?
