Leave work when you want or leave when its time to leave?

Post by postiewhite »

I'm talking about days when you can finish on time or a few mins early are you allowed to go as long as everything is cleared? In regards to our office on light days when there is nothing to do people just go upto an hour early on light days such as a tuesday. I have worked in other offices where they have a policy that no one is allowed to leave until the last postie is back unless it goes over time which i think works and stops people rushing around hell for leather to get away early and entice them to actually go and help the ones who are on longer duties. in our office there are some easy duties where it can be done in 3 hours, sometimes less and others which take upto 5 hrs and cannot in any way finish early on light days.

what are your thoughts on being allowed to finish then go early or waiting for the last person to come back to office before being allowed to leave.?

It's potentially very awkward. BillyBob is wanting some docket so is dragging it out. FrankieJoe has a promise on so is keen to get away.

Obviously FrankieJoe will get finished sooner and would like to nip away and visit his bit of stuff for afternoon nookie. However Manager Jock says to him, 'sorry bud, BillyBob is struggling today. You gotta go back out and help him out.'

Both posties are extremely cheesed off, each for their own reasons. The moral of this tale? Don't get back early unless you expect that you may get sent out again - book all nookie for after 3pm.

Are there still duties out there that can be completed 1 hour before time, provided you are doing the job properly? Not in my office.

It should be like this in every office. The ones that do return early should be made to stay until their finishing time or until all posties are back (if this is before the finish time). I believe this would stop people being accused of running around, cutting corners etc because they finish earlier than the slower ones.

should be able to go when you have done your duty.

people who are capable of finishing should not be punished for being good, because someone doesnt work hard enough and plods round.

hard, fast workers get punished enough as it is, getting put on the bigger walks as no one else can do them in time, getting put with slow partners to 'help them out'

this is one of the few jobs where being good at is is not rewarded.

making the good staff stay because someone else is slow is not fair

Just because you're fast doesn't mean that your good at your job most complaints seem to stem around the speed merchants :cuppa

no correlation at all, the people who make the most complaint worthy mistakes in our office are a mixture of fast and slow, young and old

Why does someone who finished early mean they cut corners? What if they just work at a quick pace.

then they should go and help someone else out. Why should someone get to go home early in paid hours when others are still working ? If people are going slowly and are taking the p1ss then thats a management issue, in the mean time, posties should be prepared to work the hours theyre getting paid for.

So much time can be saved by...
Overfilling your HCT/LWT (104/32Kg respectively), so that you do not have to replenish at the van or bag drop
Locking up HCTs at the end of streets for more than 10 minutes
Leaving LWTs unattended for more than 1 minute, while you deliver to a multi-storey block of flats
Using a pouch on slightly heavier days on a HCT duty, when there is too much to carry by hand
Filtering mail for the next address while on the move, instead of standing still outside the previous address, risking an accident which could result in your sick pay not being paid
Giving occupants less than 1 minute to answer an attendance call
Leaving parcels in insecure places, such as on doorstep; inside unlocked porches; in wheelie bins; under flower pots etc.
Cutting across the grass or hurdling a low wall/fence to get to the next address, instead of using the intended pathway
etc. etc.

The above could easily account for over an hour difference in delivery time between two OPGs on the same duty, with a very similar workload, one working correctly and one breaking from correct protocols.

I don't understand how some OPGs who consistently finish early, get away with prepping some/all of their own duty's D2D for the following day before they go home (often still early), when surely managers should be getting them to prep D2D for other duties that are regularly claiming overtime.

thats a great post mate, a lof of this "faster working pace" is because people do a lot of the above, i think if people are honest with themselves theyd admit that. If its the case that they are doing everything you have listed and still finishing early then I think their walks need looking at....
The people who are "slow" are a lot of times the people observing most of what you talked about, to be honest i dont think anyone does everything theyre supposed to as theyd never get done, but some do more of it than others. Sometimes these kinds of people are looked on as "trouble makers" or "trying to take the p!ss" when in fact theyre the ones doing the job as specified by RM more than those who are getting complete every day with time to spare.

It should be work to time. Job and finish has been agreed away a long time ago now.

Start hours, finish hours. - If back early sitting around gawping at the OT board or being concerned with who's put their name down for whatever, who's done what docket this week, blah blah, then there is tons of work to do around the office - Tidy away trays on the floor, pull all the loose yorks together, sort bags out, make the office look tidy. ! Just general stuff to work to time if there is no more mail to go out.

Every other job out there has a start to finish time, people know where they stand. If if becomes OT, Then that's down to the managers, it's OT after that.

Lot's of bleating about being made to work 10/20 mins over on certain days, being asked to flex etc when people forget so easy that last Tuesday they went home an hour earlier, last Friday 20 mins etc here and there.

No wonder battles are being had between Doms, Linos and OPG's

It may stop the early starters, it may stop the early leavers but what it will do is show the job, rounds for what they are.

Or maybe I'm being to simplistic
