No leave remaining but need day off, Advice needed!

Hi guys

What is the chances of getting a day off unpaid? Do they have to give it to me if I insist on taking unpaid leave?
I may need it to do a house move, so I cannot wholly control when it will be.

Can't insist on it best thing is be honest and plead your case, otherwise swap your day off with a colleague

If its an unintentional home move then you might be able to get a Domestic Distress Special Leave, but that cannot be planned in advance for obvious reasons.

I do not condone anything but cases like these are a reason why RM has a sick leave problem. I have worked in a few jobs, never have I known it so hard to get a day off. Nobody I know understands why we have to book leave so far in advance and cannot get a day off if an opportunity to do something comes out of the blue. I understand operational needs etc but for god sake RM, treat your staff properly and with compassion and changes would be accepted so much easier.

Offer to do a swap with somebody on their day off to work your duty, you can return favour later.

House move is at least listed, as being a reason for "special leave C" so I assume it has to be considered properly by my boss!

Dishonesty is 100% acceptable if not essential in many walks of like. If you were honest all the time you would have no friends and would likely be locked up.

Being honest in this situation means you don't get to go to your brothers wedding or your best friends stag do. That to me and most people is not acceptable. Any company should have enough regard for their staffs welfare to allow them to take leave (which they have accrued) on rare occasions when they have a big commitment. This company regularly fails on that issue.

This company also regularly fails to pay claimed over time (allegedly), bullies it's staff (allegedly) and gives them unachievable workload - how honest is that? Is honesty a one-way affair in the workplace?

Having said that, for the record I have never ever called in sick when not genuinely sick and would never do so nor encourage anyone else to do so as it would be a breach of contract.

I agree that honesty should be a two way street.

ZX makes the point that falsely claiming your sick is dishonest. True. However Royal Mail (via incompetent Managers who are incapable of Managing anything) do not encourage their staff to be honest. Hence BBs statement. Whenever you try to get an important day off, be it Weddings, Appointments, Reunions the answer is normally, "We're short of staff there's no way I can let you have that time off".

Royal Mail are not a small family run business employing a few locals. They should have systems in place to Manage these types of occurrences. Unfortunately these problems are incapable of being solved by most of the so called Managers they employ. There are a few good ones and when you're lucky to get one you suddenly see how easy it is to maybe swap a few duties about of offer some overtime. It should not simply be left to a Postie to, "Try and find someone to swap your Saturday with". You get paid to Manage so Manage!
