Overtime rates

Post by franco1 »

As a new starter i have yet to ask about OT rates, i normally receive SSPR but today also received OT/1.
What is OT/1 and why is at a hourly rate lower then my hourly basic rate?

SSPR is a rate that will bring your money upto a full timers wage in comparison. ( you get a propotion of RRiS ( if applicable ) and delivery suppliment added to a normal OT rate.

OT/1 and OT/2 are the standard rates of overtime after you have worked 39 hours for the week

OT/1 is paid for the first 10 hours of subsequent OT with OT/2 being paid after that.

Or do what I do and refuse any 'excess' unless you book it at time and a half (i.e. 1hours pay for 40mins excess)

If RM pay a lower OT rate without pension contributions and no meal relief why would they increase anyones contracted hours?

This is dangerous misinformation. Overtime can be pensionable for part timers. A part-timer, say on a 25 hour contract, will pay extra pension contributions and will receive additional pension contributions from RM for up to a total of 14 hours overtime p/w. It is only time in excess of 39 hours p/w that is not pensionable. That is why so many full timers wander around saying overtime is not pensionable; for them it isn't- but for part timers it is up to the 39 hour p/w mark.

Also isn't it false to say there is no meal relief with overtime? As I understand it, SA overtime does not include paid meal relief but 'normal' overtime, i.e. extended delivery or clearing up leftovers does attract extra meal relief.

I certainly have always used this to my advantage, and it works out at about an extra 5 minutes of paid break for every hour of overtime I do. It may not sound much, but an hour paid break for an 11 hr day isn't too shabby, IMO. Certainly better than I've been used to in other jobs.
