Tax Rebate, New Tax Code.

Post by JoeMbg »

Hi, been employed by royal mail directly for around 8 weeks now. Have worked at my current office since January. Received a letter from HMRC last week saying my tax code had been changed due to my personal allowance. its changed from 0T/1 to 1072L/0. on this week's payslip in the decisions section it is -1119.00. total deductions are -1064.80. bringing my net pay to 1655.85. Is this some form of rebate for overpayment of tax? I was under the impression hmrc dealt with rebates etc. Any info would be great. Cheers.

Looks like you were on an emergency code with £0 tax free allowance. Your updated code now includes both the single person's allowance of £10,600 AND an annual clothing cleaning allowance of £120 TOTAL TFA £10,720 => Tax code of 1072. (TFA/10)

Not all employees have got this annual clothing allowance (I didn't) and now now waiting for them to give me a rebate/alter my tax coding.

This is correct. HMRC contact Royal Mail and inform them about your new tax code and then Royal Mail pays you your rebate. I only heard recently about the marriage allowance (if your partner is working and earning under the £10,600 threshold (total income for house less than £42,385)) you can apply for marriage allowance. Some of your partners tax allowance is added on to yours. My tax code is now 1178. HMRC website says you save £212 a year. I got a bit of a rebate too because it came in in April. You can apply directly on the website, all you need is both national insurance numbers. Got immediate approval and got the rebate (in payslip) within two weeks. Better in the workers pocket than HMRC's.

Yep as you say if your partner is earning less than the threshold figure quoted you can have up to £1060 added to your TFA and 20% of this £1060 is exactly £212 - just under £4 a week extra but of course it is backdated to April 2015 so if you apply between now and the end of this current tax year then you will get a nice wedge in the first week of the tax coding change. :Very Happy
