Duty Holder Away

Hi i started coming up to 12 weeks ago and was put on a walk that belongs to a duty holder who asked to go on a drive duty which would become vacant once the drive duty postie transfered to another office.
He remained in the office doing bits and bobs waiting for the transfer to go through and i did his walk.
However it now seems that the transfer is taking longer then expected and the duty holder has requested to go back onto his duty that im currently doing until the other posties transfer goes through.
My question is, is the duty holder able to do this? Do i have any rights in this matter with regards to staying on the duty walk?

no, may seem harsh but consider yourself lucky to get bedded in on one duty, very rare these days,
so many newbies get chucked in at the deep end and been thrown from pillar to post with very little training then quitting after a week or less!
look at the reserves in your office, we have some touching 10 years service without a sniff of a duty

You answered your own question in the title "duty holder" ...And even if the duty were to become vacant it would be filled on seniority basis . I'm afraid you're only filling in until such a time as the duty gets advertised .

I am pleased to have been put on one duty for so long.
I spoke with union rep and he told me that once the transfer does go through i will be put on duty and if nobody makes any noise then i may well stay on duty.
I doubt it though as im sure duty will be advertised and someone will go for it even though its not the best walk in the office.
Thanks for advice looks like ill be spending the xmas lost, confused and with a ton of mail to deliver!!

you should by now know the craic and settled in on knowing the basics of the job.
afraid you may now be subject to "have bag will travel"
i loved it when i started, different places all the time and a good job but now changed slightly over the years!

even though we all moan on here, the actual job is still quite good, it's just those who run it make it very hard and make you want to kick something (or one)

Have bag or HTC and will travel.
Too be honest i dont mind doing different walks its just the first few times when your lost and confused and you have those moments when you think why am i doing this job!
Once i know a walk im sure i can speed it up and things wont seem so bad.

This is relevant to you. It still won't be 'your' duty even if you do it every day of the week for years on end - until you sign for it. For that to happen the duty has to be advertised and the most senior applicant will get it and it will become 'their' duty (even if they rarely get to actually do it).

I wouldn't get too settled into any duty as a newbie if I were you. I've been here less than 6 years now and randomly cover about 2 dozen rounds now. It's good fun once you've got the mindset for it!

Agree with above. You should expect to be on a different round each week for the first 2 years and if you are not then treat it as a bonus.
