first sick contact

Post by frog frog »

hi
any one help/advise ?
the manager at our office is working flexible hours covering 3 shifts and it is knot known when they are going to be on site.
the office is not maned until approx. 6.15am
if we can not attend for work how do we make contact before start of shift at 5am
we have requested the managers appropriate attendance times via a union rep but have as yet not been told.
we have been told by union rep that we can have the managers personal mobile phone number and call at any time.
but we do not think this it is appropriate as 1, we do not want to call to be yelled at for calling at a bad time.
2, A mobile phone should be provided by royal mail so that a audit-able trail can be maintained.
3, the manager could say that a call had not been received.
if we do not call we are in breach of the sickness standards/procedure but who do we call ?
at the moment all we can do is keep calling the office phone and let it ring until someone/anyone passing the office pick up and ask and hope that a message be past on,
the reason for your sickness has to be disclosed under the sickness standards/procedure on first contact and may be personal and confidential but ends up being freely broadcast around the office.

If there is no management level available to be contacted until 06.15 am then it is their responsibility to put a procedure in place for earlier starts not attending work how contact is to be made.

if no manager is on site then shouldn't there be a nominated PIC (Person in charge) and absences would be reported to them. If there is no PIC then its fairly certain that no risk assessment has been made for staff starting before managers are present.

If the rep can't/wont do anything then suggest he contact the ASR (Area Safety Rep) that would soon get a system put in place.

BTW RM have to do a risk assessment for any new task or procedure, and they should review all standing risk assessments within a certain time period. I am betting neither gets done.

Managers are issued a mobile phone for business use so you should be able to leave them either a voice message or send a text.
I'm still amazed the offices don't have answer phones, Easier to leave a message at 3am when walking out of A&E than trying to wake up / stay awake till someone is actually in the office to answer the phone.
