European Court Ruling
I'm surprised there has been no comments on yesterday's ruling where some employees will be allowed to count travel time to and from work as part of their contractual hours, this will benefit the likes of mobile care workers, gas engineers etc but how about Royal Mail reserves who work in a cluster of offices?.

Travel time from your office to another is included in your duty hours

Re: European Court Ruling
Are reserves not based in a particular office and "loaned" where necessary? Have a look at the first part of your payroll number and that should tell you - far as I'm aware each unit has it's own numerical code and whichever yours is should be the office you are officially based at regardless of how little or often you actually work there.
I've a feeling "area reserve" is a phrase conjured up by a few DIMs to help reduce OT or time taken for travel to and from your official office. That said I could be totally wrong and this is another example of reserves being treated like cattle.

unfortunately they do exist, it's not made up by a few DOMs, there are not that many areas that use them most areas generally do as you say and loan people out but they do exist and this ruling could get interesting for them if the union takes it in

Disgraceful - I've been with the company for a long time and the way our Union leaders have looked the other way when it comes to the treatment of reserves over the last few years is nothing short of abhorrent. They should be ashamed.zx135 wrote: unfortunately they do exist, it's not made up by a few DOMs, there are not that many areas that use them most areas generally do as you say and loan people out but they do exist and this ruling could get interesting for them if the union takes it in

They exist in my area as well and they travel to delivery offices in a 20 mile radius from homezx135 wrote:CharlesSpooner wrote:Are reserves not based in a particular office and "loaned" where necessary? How about workers who had their office shut down 7 years ago and now work within a neighbouring office 4 miles away? We start there and currently finish at the old office's town where most of us live, vehicles parked on home premises.

In my experience, it is the newer Postmen who are loaned out. Part-time, they are always on the lookout for extra cash and invariably work on in the offices their loaned to... these guys generally have young families to look out for.

Worth a mention - anyone working at different offices must have business insurance for their car unless a RM van/lift has been provided. Otherwise, you are only insured to travel to your base office each day.

Re: European Court Ruling
Never heard of an Area Reserve, is in the job description ??
I have read on here that for normal reserves, there is nothing wrong with going to the parent office and allowing them to arrange transport to the other offices. In this way, travelling time is included in the overall delivery span and that plus the general lack of delivery vans available usually prevent managers from doing this.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
