labour leadership vote
hi i have just recieved an email from the labour party saying my vote in the leadership race will not be counted. They say the cwu which i have been a member of for four years has no record of my membership, despite me paying their subs for four years. how do i go about getting my vote to count? anyone else been rejected or is this just labour trying to rig the vote?

Does anyone actually think before they hit the submit button?jamesk wrote: anyone else been rejected or is this just labour trying to rig the vote?
Does anyone actually believe Labour are trying to rig the vote?
I was once refused credit as I wasn't on the electoral register despite having voted for a number of years and receiving my polling card at the address.
It turned out I was on the electoral register as living at 16 Acacia Avenue and I had given my address as flat 1 16 Acacia Avenue. It didn't compute.
So it might be something really simple like that but hey let's go off on some weird conspiracy theory about vote rigging before we find out the facts.
Never let the hand you hold, hold you down.

Are you an affilaited member though. You have to pay into the Political Fund to be able to vote. Your Pay chit will say CWU Opt In, if you are.

Re: labour leadership vote
Has anyone who registered as a CWU affiliated member received a ballot yet?
I have paid the CWU political levy for 34 years. I was a member of the Labour Party until the war on Iraq, and I was Branch Political Officer and delegate to my CLP General Management Committee. I did register as a CWU affiliated member, but have not received a ballot yet with only 8 days left before the ballot closes. I have not received anything from the Labour Party to say I won't receive a vote, like the op.
I must be on a voting list as I have received a letter asking me to vote for one of the Labour leadership candidates, and two letters asking me to vote for two of the Labour London Mayoral candidates.
Does anyone know what is happening?

Re: labour leadership vote
I have received an e-mail saying I am unable to vote, they don`t think I support Labour values, feel both proud and upset at the same time
I have always been a socialist and active in the Labour party years ago, I have never voted for any other party in any election and know of no reason why my registration has been rejected.
I would urge the Union to voice concerns over Labour supporters been denied a voice.

If Corbyn gets in, he will make labour unelectable, we have been there before, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Ki ... tion,_1983" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; also the "Longest suicide note" with more left wing policies than usual under Michael foot,

It doesn't matter what the Labour membership think, they are not the one that put it in Government, it the general population that ultimately decides.

NWpostie, the Daily Telegraph is a Tory supporting paper. I wouldn't use it for wiping my @rse let alone take advice from it on how to vote.

Re: labour leadership vote
I received the same email as the OP , and my payslip says OPT OUT though I don't remember opting out.
I remember receiving a letter about it , and not being happy with a couple of things they used the money for , but never returned
it wishing to opt out.
Though it is worrying they have no record of you even being a union member , why didn't the email say though you are a member of said union , you are not paying the political levy.

Because of change to the law, you actively have to opt in. As you didn't you aren't an affialited member so therefore that makes you inelligible to vote.tractorboy2 wrote:I received the same email as the OP , and my payslip says OPT OUT though I don't remember opting out.

Corbyn is not Michael foot, and longest suicide note in history is a fallacy. Thatcher won not because of her policies but because of a successful re-occupation of the Falklands, of which I played a very minor part. She won on a wave of euphoria and was extremely fortunate in the timings. Certainly before the War she was seen as likely to be ousted mainly because of unemployment going over 3,000,000 just before the war, and inflation running as high as 18% although it was down to 8.6% in the January of 82. Manufacturing output was 30% lower than 1978.
However the main reason she was elected was she received 42% of the vote, but Labours share was split between the SDLP (24%) and the Labour Party (27%) if the split hadn't happened its possible that Labour would have won, but we shall never know.
If he is so unelectable how come he has received more than 50% of votes in every general election he has stood in since 1983 (the only year he didn't achieve that remarkable result). When people use the term "unelectable" I think they are saying "I won't vote them", which is fair enough, we don't all hold the same values, but Corbyns is closer to mine, than the other candidates.
Also lets be honest, and I may be wrong, but I think most of the Blairites are too far to the left for you, but we probably in agreement that most of them are unelectable as well (albeit for different reasons).

Re: labour leadership vote
You are most certainly wrong to make assumptions about my political leanings and views, just because I don't agree with some left wing members of the forum doesn't make me a right wing reactionary, in fact it would be disingenuous to do so and contrary to the spirit of open reasoned debate on the merits of the political system and future leaders thereof.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:NWpostie wrote:If Corbyn gets in, he will make labour unelectable, we have been there before, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Ki ... tion,_1983" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; also the "Longest suicide note" with more left wing policies than usual under Michael foot,

Michael Foot's policies doesn't really stand up in the real world and the public voted accordingly essentially handing victory to the Tories on a platter, Micheal Foor might have recieved 50% of the vote but the electoral system states otherwise, Corbyn's policies is liking to go the same way also he has questionable associations with terrorist representatives, no matter how wonderful his supporters think he is, the voting public will make their choices they are not stupid and resent being described as a bigoted right wing reactionary who dares to oppose left wing orthodoxy and will vote accordingly.
As to the Falklands, the eye was off the ball on that one and it would be unthinkable to allow British citizens to live under a murderous military dictatorship, that would be the end of Thatcher's career or indeed any incumbent poltical leader of the time regardless of some opinions to enter into a negotiated settlement, you do not negotiate away freedom.
Thatcher was lucky we won and it was a very close run thing, the Argentinians fought very hard on some hills and we lost a lot of good ships.
The economy did pick up shortly after that with boom, increased job opportunity, home ownership, mobility of careers, technological advancement stimulated by increased prosperity, would this happen under a labour government after 1983 election we will never know, as it is the next labour government was Tony Blair who's legacy is still debated.
