Are you within your rights to claim overtime if you are put on an unfamiliar round.
Also theres a notice up in our office that states you will not be paid extended delivery overtime if you dont tell manager prior to leaving for delivery.
Also told that overtime will not be paid if traffic is below a certain level.
Clarity on these points would be useful. Thanks

Yes you are entitled to claim overtime if you go over your contract hours. If they fail to pay you without reasonable cause then its illegal withholding of wages. But if you fail to tell them you may go over that could be a reasonable cause.
Play it by the book, when you go onto a new duty tell the manager you are new to it so it may take you longer and what DO THEY want you to do.

I suppose I shouldn't be but I'm amazed at some of the tricks the managers try to pull in delivery offices

If you didn't tell him before you left but phoned him up on delivery and said that you couldn't get done because you didn't know how long it would take so it looks as though you're going to have to cut off because you can't book overtime as you didn't tell him earlier, I bet he would soon change his tune.

In all honest id do what TBT said, if it's a duty you are unfamiliar with tell your manager you don't know how long it takes so don't know if you'll get done on time but if not are they willing to pay you to extend or do they want it brought back.

alternatively you are new and don't know how long it will take and do not wish to stay out so as soon as you know if you will complete or not you will let them know.
In both cases (FFS) have someone with you who can confirm your version of events, as has been proven in the past our managers have so much on their minds they forget these little exchanges of information.
