Hi all.
I had a meeting with a manager about whether or not he should give me a stage 1 warning about absense.
I wasn't informed I could have a union rep with me or a friend in this meeting...
2 of my absences were single days due to illness and the other 2 were for an injury I got at work, trapped a nerve in my back throwing off my frame and was sent to hospital by the line manager
. Had a day off next day, returned to work as I hate phoning in sick only to ring in sick again due to the injury still causing me issues.
I was under the impression injurys which happen at work are generally discounted? I can get the medical evidence that's it's genuine if they want, evidence of Physio etx.
He's since got another manager to issue me with it, told me to sign it.
I never got told he was planning on giving me it, or gave me a chance to fight against it, as per my apparent right.
What's best cause action here? I'm all still quite new to this job and it's quite daunting
I know it's not a huge deal but I don't like having this black mark against my name

Re: Given a stage 1
You are right - it isn't a huge deal.
In six months, assuming no further absences you will have cleared your stage 1.
It would appear that the 2 absences relating to your trapped nerve should have been treated as one absence and then you wouldn't have triggered the review.
You could take out a grievance over the lack of union representation but make sure they haven't given you a letter telling you you could have a union rep present.
A lot of hassle for no reward.
You could put in a covering letter stating that you had no union representation and that 2 of the absences were related and shouldn't have been dealt with separately.
If you ever reach stage 3 - dismissal- it will give you some ammunition.
Or just relax, put it down to experience and move on.
You will know better next time.

Re: Given a stage 1
there are other implications though if they are still a trialist or have done under 12 months.

Under 12 months then the absence limits are more restrictive and then the fact that as a trialist if on a stage you can't be confirmed. It happened to me so its no biggy, but it is worrying when its not explained by the managers/reps very well.

Rep should go in and have it thrown out,if this was at my place I'd go all the way,as far as I could.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
