Part timers doing full time hours have a Harder time

Post by sophie97 »

Note: for Any full timers on here, this is not an attack on you guys, this is just me venting my stress at the way RM treats part timers.

So In my office, a full timer (on someone close to full time) Will come in at around 6 or 7, do several hours of indoor work (which is physically easy), leave our office between 9 and 10, lets say 9 so examples sake. go out on delivery, normal day get back between 1 and 2, so they are out walking 4 to 5 hours a day (The hardest part)

A part timer doing overtime to boost their hours up to full time, will come in around half 7 or half 8, do an hour or two of indoor work, and then do a delivery ( 4 to 5 hours) AND then do their OT, Which would be more time on delivery, sometimes 3 or more extra hours a day out walking.

So to sum up, Part timers doing full time hours, are spending alot more time out on delivery, which is alot more taxing and laborious. Yet we still get paid the same as a full timer. Dont get me wrong, im happy to get the OT and I know I can turn it down, but I just feel its a bit unfair on us Part timers, not to mention the other ways we get shafted.

You don't have to do it, if you (and all the rest) tell the DOM you're not doing it then you could get made up and you can do the 'easy' part.

And what if we cant afford to turn down OT? I have to put food on the table for the kids.

Get made up?? Haha, dnt make us laugh, nobody gets made up do they?! I know p/t's at my office who have done full time hours 4 the best part of 10 years but they are stil on 25 or 29 hour contracts.
And yes, we don't have to do overtime but i'd say the majority of us p/t's cant survive on our basic 25 hours & so we must do overtime. When i take a weeks annual leave, ive still gotta cum 2 work on 2 of those days just to make my hours up. Been a part timer at royal mail is a joke & a pi$$ take. CWU don't do anything to enforce the agreements that are supposed to be in place to give us contracts that reflect the hours we actually work, day in day out, week after week, month after month &its so frustrating!!!!

And what about the newer part-timers who have been given regular walks where longer serving full-timers are spare and being treated like s**t because there's only so many "full-time" walks available?

As above, you don't have to do it, if you don't like the pay/work/hours then look elsewhere for another job (best of luck on that score - plenty more ruthless businesses out there than RM - it might not be ideal but you could be so much more worse off). Part-timers signed up to part-time hours, it's possible you were led to believe by the company that you'd get above and beyond your hours or even in the future made up to full-time (very rare), not something I condone and I feel for part-timers in that respect.
Making part-timers work extra on delivery to gain more money and full-timers being pissed about is probably why, where I work, there's a constant shortage of staff because people are that pissed off with the way they are treated they head off elsewhere..

Note: this is not an attack on part-timers, just what I see, hear, think..

This excuse that we knew what the hours were when we started won't wash, in reality most were hoping that they would be full time by now, in my case 6 years later. It's right to say this is a complete lack of co-ordination by the CWU, but under the current government the union's position in the workplace is going to be weakened even further.

I still feel the need to phone up begging for work in this day and age when off on a rest week (sixth week off) as the meagre wage I take home on this flat week is bordering on subsistence levels for a UK family. I find the fluctuations in pay we get as a p/t worker week by week difficult to manage. But I love the job itself so I won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Indoor work is easy? Or physically easy as you put it. Good luck with the backlash from that.

Personally I find that the most tiring part. The quicker im out the office and away from managers and weirdo, clueless colleagues the better.

At the risk of repeating myself - the Union cannot "enforce" agreements, they can only enter disagreements or help members with a grievance. This may mean that at some point members may have to take action. Is the rep convinced you and your colleagues are up for it.

Also just a point for clarification, the way the agreement is worded a part timers hours will be reviewed on a 6 month basis with a view to increasing hours, but only those hours that are overtime to enable them to complete their own duty. If you accept extra duties to do overtime it doesn't count.

If everyone came in at their start time, took their meal relief and worked at a steady pace, perhaps more full time jobs would become available. Sadly, that'll never happen, because in our office we have full timers rushing around carving up their own rounds, essentially making their round look like it can be done in less hours. Some people just don't know their luck.

Can you give any more info about having hours reviewed after 6 months? This is something I'd like to bring up wi my rep.

Not allowed! Your annual leave is from Monday to Sunday. If you do come in to work then the days you have worked should be added back onto you leave entitlement.

No it isn't allowed but how many p/t staff were there when that clause was included in the Way Forward?
What contracts were they on and was progression to f/t still possible?
How many of the p/t staff in those days could find a second job to supplement their wages whereas now timings and fatigue make it virtually impossible.
No it isn't allowed but what does someone do when they have to put food on the table for their children?

Are any offices of pt time people who are doing OT to get the office clear due for a revision? We've just gone through our 3rd since 2010, but this time we made sure we included everything we could e.g. CoD, DTN, extra tracked, taking vans to garage, proper packet counts (for the whole week, not just on a Tuesday) etc, and it looks as though all our PT will be able to increase their hours, true not all up to FT, but we also made duties for 35 hours as well.

As others have said, if you have PT doing FT hours week after week, then use the 6 month process, make sure rep has the weekly Resource meetings, so they can have it in the notes - that again PT staff are having to backfill, it's all grist, also if you have management doing lots of opg work, start logging it and use that as well, and get rep to check on any unfilled vacancies.

It's not easy, but if your rep can persevere and get your area rep involved as well, you have a good chance to get what you think is due to your office.
