New postal D2D contract 'good news'

A new contract to deliver unaddressed mail to some 2.7 million UK homes is "good news for everyone," reports CWU national officer Bob Gibson.

"It's been a longstanding policy of the union to encourage Royal Mail to fight for new work. And time and time again it's been the CWU, from national level right the way to our members on the front line, who have been the most pro-active with ideas and suggestions for new products and services," he said.

While full details of the new 'door-to-door' (D2D) delivery product have not yet been released for commercial-sensitivity reasons, it is expected to be a standard-sized item, under 20g, for an unnamed company and will be going out to specific areas of the country.

"This type of volume growth is exactly what our industry needs in order to protect jobs and develop new revenue streams," Bob continued, adding that it "provides an opportunity to demonstrate flexibility and agility to sectors where Royal Mail would like to grow volume and where companies have significant marketing budgets but make heavy use of other communication channels.


"It has been frustrating that, from a CWU perspective, the business has not focussed enough on the growth of this particular type of contract which is a bespoke product and, hopefully, the winning of this new contract is sign of a more positive approach in this respect.

"This should be seen as good news for our members."

The CWU hopes that, with cost-effective pricing and a sound joint plan in place, Royal Mail will be able to generate more volume from these types of contracts which fits in with our joint aspirations to bring more revenue and workload into the system.

Specific local discussions should take place between now and the commencement of the contract in those units that will be handling these items.

I agree with this, but it always annoys me that Royal Mail and CWU don't make sure proper plans are in place to complete it, especially as it means you will go over and have to cut off or get OT, and the usual moaning from lino's and DOMs.Personally I still think we should get paid for D2D per item, but I believe that we should have to fight for the above, everyone seems to think we opg are lazy and hang it out and any time it gets busy we should work at a unnatural pace or skip breaks etc, if the work needs extra pay then the CWU should make sure all area reps get in touch with all DOMs and rep in their area and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Well I must be in the minority because when I was delivering I don't remember ever saying we should do more D2Ds. It may be a wish of the CWU and RM hierarchy but I'll bet there aren't many on the shop floor gagging for it.

I'm not saying I like D2D, in fact like you I hate them to quite a degree, but I do believe that D2D have meant I have managed to stay full time, but would still like to have the limit of 3.
