time and motion blokes
or more specifically, workload to resoursing managers. but T&M is their original name. anyways, there is currently two in our office now, one is there for 20 weeks, reviewing our workloads and staff levels. he will be trying to get more work out of us with less staff thats a certainty. but the other one is reviewing our fleet, and trying to see how many vans he can take OFF US.!! yes, take away. the dom says he is going to try to put the block on it but whatever they can get, they will. we are a park and loop office for christ sakes. they made us adopt this new way of working. now they want to change it back. apparently its because of spiralling fuel costs and van maintenance. our deliveries are 4.45hrs long. dom says they will try for duties near to the office, and adopt those as HCT duties. but then they wont be able to take larger packets. they will probably go to another duty. this job is getting madder and madder. rep reckons it will go national.....suits me...bring back 3.5 hr duties and bus fares. they've dropped a right clanger with park and loop and they know it.!!
anyone else getting this?

What makes you think if you have a HCT trolley it will be a 3.5hr delivery?

Re: time and motion blokes
because if they take our vans away it will add quite a bit of conveyance time to a lot of the duties. about an hour on ours alone.A2B wrote:What makes you think if you have a HCT trolley it will be a 3.5hr delivery?

Re: time and motion blokes
It will all depend on how close the office is to the first delivery point of course, i believe anything outside a mile from the office will be a van duty. They could always drop you out in a van with the HCT but make sure it's done correctly on a health & safety basis

Of course it would ,once your dropped off it's all human power rather than stop-start in the vanRumple wrote:Yeah, coz that'd save fuel, wouldn't it?A2B wrote:They could always drop you out in a van with the HCT but make sure it's done correctly on a health & safety basis
On a slightly different point, i wonder if they are looking at how much of the day a van is actually in motion rather than parked on the street?

Re: time and motion blokes
I'd be surprised if there's much fuel difference, if any. There used to be a large van doing all the drop bags all across the town and also afternoon duties doing the oversize parcels. It meant that every duty would need to be driven round twice every day with just a few stops; now it's only driven once but with more stops and starts in it.

Re: time and motion blokes
I just thought of this great idea...RM could save lots of money on fuel and expensive vans if they brought in bikes !
Posties could ride out to their deliveries with their first bag, then what we could do is have just a few larger vans, serving a set number of postmen, and bring them a bag each time they needed one, and in the meantime that driver could deliver some larger packages.
I think this could save a lot of money, has anyone thought of it before ?

Or even electric bikes, for some of us in extremely hilly areas, always said this P&L was a crap idea. Some will get a big bonus for thinking of bikes and spin it as a new idea :)Postie45 wrote:I just thought of this great idea...RM could save lots of money on fuel and expensive vans if they brought in bikes !

I wonder how cheerful higher up will be when your DO starts to fail whole walks every day through not having enough vansdaveyeff wrote:but the other one is reviewing our fleet, and trying to see how many vans he can take OFF US.!! yes, take away. the dom says he is going to try to put the block on it but whatever they can get, they will.

Re: time and motion blokes
In my opinion this is a hangover from Leighton. When he worked at Mars, Pedigree and ASDA he would have lived under the ethos of "Just in Time". When he came to Royal Mail he brought the ethos but changed it to "Just Enough for Usual" so when it gets busy the pressure is on, but when its quiet we are all twiddling our thumbs, being WTL'd to death, or watching bullshit corporate TV.

And then the van would have to return to the office and convey the next hct, then the next one, then the next one....A2B wrote:Of course it would ,once your dropped off it's all human power rather than stop-start in the vanRumple wrote:Yeah, coz that'd save fuel, wouldn't it?A2B wrote:They could always drop you out in a van with the HCT but make sure it's done correctly on a health & safety basis
Then you'd have the cost of paying us to push the hct back to the office at the end of delivery from a long way away. Maybe 30 minutes plus, multiplied by numerous duties. Yeah, great savings!

Re: time and motion blokes
In my old office, when we used to use bikes, there was one duty that was one of the furthest away from the DO that was at the bottom of a long, steep hill. On the 318 the time allowed to travel to the first delivery point was 10 minutes going out (fair enough as mostly downhill) and 15 minutes coming back! I doubt that Bradley Wiggins or Chris Froome could have done it in that time!
The duty holder used to use his private car anyway, so not usually a problem, but I did cover the walk for a few days and, as I always used a bike, I used to claim o/t most days to return to the office (had to push the bike up the hill). Needless to say, I only covered the walk once!
