Yes just for picking duties mainly. Some offices allow senior reserves first pick of spare duties each week but there's nothing that says they have to in afraid

Reserve list should be in seniority order! Top bod picks 1st ect ect,(bar specialist duties ect)get your rep on to it,or go higher.
Duty holders picked on seniority did they not? reserves aren't aliens you know.

No Seniority is for resigns and holidays , the reserve list should be done on a rolling list everyone goes up one space each week so at one point everyone will have first pick.

Seniority is not and isn't allowed to be used for holidays

To clarify seniority can be used for holidays as long as its not the overiding process.

That means you can have different groups that move up and down the list even if the list itself is based on seniority. Goup 1 with the most senior people, gets 1st choice year one, but last choice year 2 - this is legal and compliant with agreements.

Seriously! Allocation of duties for Reserves should really be about the 'need' of the office and the knowledge of Reserves taken as a whole...

Having said the above, it will really depend on the composition of the office and the duties to cover... Full duties that require a double prep will usually go to a full time staff. And a 20+ hour duty that needs cover will usually go the the 20+ posties in the office. Why? Most FT staff have there sort of extra duties - some will be on IPS most, if not all the time, some will be on Parcels, some will interchange bet Parcels/IPS and some will generally double-prep and sometimes do IPS/Parcels.

Then you have the knowledge base to consider; and also you also have the fairness factor - not just about easier duties but Saturdays off as well. So a Senior Reserve will not always get their way (or first pick) - even if the manager wants to apply seniority. Duty allocation is up to the manager!

What I usually post unofficially...

Get a seniority list of the reserves.
Go down the list so they reserves get the pick of what duties are available for the next week.
They should then in the interest of fairness...
Have the day off of the duty they are covering,if it's 'Bobs' duty and it's a Sat off then they have that.If 'Bob' was on it he would have that day off wouldn't he.
Get some kind of aggregate list, that way you can keep an eye on who's had Sat's off,if some, even if they are low on seniority in the list have not had a Sat off for a while then they get priority.

To complicate matters even more, you have non-driver Reserves and non-drivers walkholders...

Most managers do not do lists and do not do real fairness - as it involves a lot of work and cannot be maintained week to week, month to month...

We always go back to the real knob of the issue... Easier walks and fairness. If the walks are much of a muchness, why should anyone care which walk they are doing and who is choosing first.

My office is so tight in terms of composition of FT/PT - I think we have more PT that FT these days. We have no 32 hours Reserves - we only have FT Reserves and PT (27hrs) Reserves. Some PTs are throwing out 2 walks, some of doing plenty of OT, some do SA, some do HCT rounds (as FT or 32 hrs), none does the Rurals and Firms... We have job shares, we have 24 hours 3 days, we a hybrid duty, we have 2 on long term sick (1 a reserve usual firms/rural driver) and so on... The managers have enough problems trying to get all walks covered that they will not be willing to use lists and monitor said lists...

The managers clearly tell us that it is resourcing to workload but it is the Reserves that are being messed around week in week out. Reserves do not necessarily even cover a walk for a week. A reserve could be covering 3,4 or 5 different walks in a week - it just depends on what has to be covered.

And yes, Postman, Reserves are Aliens!

* I am covering a FT round next week (for a non driver) but on his day off I am covering a 27.5 hrs long term sick as a Driver with a walkholder FT who is a non-driver. How that decision was made, I do not know!

** I do not cover Firms/Rural - they might be somewhat easier but I do not like them, also I do not want to learn more rounds as the more you know, the more you get messed about. So choices have limits and I do not mind, even though we have some Reserves that are always badgering the manager for the rounds they want or do not want...
