What was the point?

So now that delivery postmen/women have been emptying boxes for a while things seem to have settled down. What I don't understand is not much seems to have changed on the original collection side of things except that collection drivers are emptying less boxes but still have the same number of staff (in our area at least). So what was the point, where has the money been saved? From the uproar when this was first announced it was said the collection drivers would be for the chop but it seems that nothing has changed.

This isn't a dig at collection drivers by the way as I've done the job myself and it comes complete with a different set of problems/pressure. I'm just interested as to what has been gained from the changes

At our office collections drivers have been given permanent lapsed rounds to do to fill their reduced workloads.

Nothing like that in our area although some of the collections have had some reorganisation.

Aye, collections have been amalgamated and an hour a day has been saved.............. the customers are now getting a 2nd class service

Plus I bet that most routes still drive past the boxes that they used to collect from . As they still have what's left of the boxes to clear. Common sense would suggest that the ones that have gone to deliveries should stay with collections if they are passing them. As whoever empty's the box either a driver or Walkman still takes approximately a minute to empty it. Typical royal mail thinks one size fits all.

What makes me laugh is we all bring our pillar box letters back to our office to be picked up about 4 pm to go to the mc 70 miles away, but the pillar box outside our office is emptied by another offices' collections driver at 3 and taken away , when one of our many lazy linos could have nipped out and emptied it !

Result is if you post something in my pillar box at 1pm thursday , it will be emptied friday at 12 then stored at our DO until 4pm , collected , sorted and delivered from saturday! Some first class service!

Question is, if the boxes are getting only one collection a day then this will mean 1st class letters could be sitting in the box over 24 hours if posted after the one and only collection? So why then would people pay to send stuff 1st class?

Because most of them are unaware that they'll be getting a 2nd class service, but paying for 1st class..... unless they know which boxes get emptied at the end of the working day.

RM advertise 1st class as next working day, however joe public doesn't tend to look at the 9am collection times posted on some boxes as they have had a lifetime of boxes being emptied at 17:00 hrs.

The general public will eventually wake up to what is going on, but by then Moya and the board will have grabbed their millions and would have gone forth and multiplied.

Actually its a very clever ploy and I think its the first of not many steps to a 9-5 job

1. Step 1 Automate mail.
2. Change 1st pass to DOs to 6am or later
3. Change to 1 pass only at 8am.
4. Introduce Bench merging.
5. Change last letters to 5pm and 6pm
5. Force Through 9am starts.

Delivery will start at 12 midday, with the driver of a pair doing the prios and tracked whilst the walker is prepping.

This means collection will be back to 1600 to 1700.

Could also see a lot more conduct hearings if delivery staff unfamiliar with the importance of collections forget a box with a test card in ... easy way to slap a charge of wilful delay on then.
