Careful what you wish for
The last few weeks those first back are being sent back out with an extra bundle or two (or a few packets). No-one can leave until these people get back to the office. These tend to be the same people every day and they've started complaining that others must be going slow or hiding in vans. Despite this we still got away a good 30-40 minutes early today (I realise it's Tuesday). If we're not careful Royal Mail will simply hold everyone back right to the bitter end to "ensure fairness" whether the work is there or not.

The easiest way, And it would solve soooo many problems, is electronic clocking machines.
Have them, and we will get paid for what we work, thats fair.
Any issues and the management can manually overide it, also if they feel someone is taking the p**s by taking longer to get more money, they can have a word.
This is something that companies have been using for 20+ years, RM are so far behind.

Then everyone else that does the job properly is judged on the early starting runners performance. More scope for management to apply pressure.borgpicard wrote:The clown that get back early in my office are the idiot runners, they just dont get it
Something else they don't get.

Re: Careful what you wish for
We have 30 postmen for 34 rounds as the ones that have left have not been replaced and these rounds are lapsed daily regardless of the mail levels.
We have runners /early starters constantly moaning at being given some of the lapsing left behind by the people working to their time .
We have P/L rounds that have the other round lapsed and have the one remaining postman throw the other round off and not do IPS but what not's fair is that they expect the one remaining person to get the other round ready for the other early starters/ runners itching to get out. Its all the DOM worries about. They also bully and try and save 2 hours each day by getting the fulltimer to throw the round off for the 6 hour a day part timer partner.
Meal reliefs and LWT's are frowned upon by management.

Re: Careful what you wish for
I brought back over a full tray of "No entries" today, there was nobody to authorise any O/T for stickering up the mail so it was left for the morning shift although I was helping out another office.Stammerking wrote:I leave my 15 minutes lapsing until I get back from my delivery and i leave it in the frame, I tell my line manager I will take it if I get back in time, 9 times out of ten its taken by the runners
Are there any procedures in place for this mail, should I be arranging with a manager at lunchtime to cut off so I have half an hour to sticker each item that there was no access to ?

Don't get the hate against the "runners". Surely each duty is planned measured and timed to normal working pace. If someone decides to work harder and quicker then they shouldn't be punished with more work.

You are paid by the hour, if you want to run and finish an hour earlier have an hours pay docked, seems fair.Mgmrfc wrote:Don't get the hate against the "runners". It's about working the hours you are paid. You don't see Tesco workers going home and hour early because they've stacked the shelves quicker than normal, they know they'll just get asked to work on the checkout or sweep the floors. The reward for hard work is more hard work. Some posties just seem to think they're tradesmen and can piss off early.Mgmrfc wrote:Don't get the hate against the "runners". Because the managers use the runners as a reason to beat the duty holder/others over the head when they cut off or claim docket. How many time do we hear "Well Mo can do it without claiming, why cant't you."
Really the runners aren't to blame the managers are, but in war who is the legitimate target, the one shooting the bullets, or the ones making them.

For a business, on paper, it makes perfect sense. If you are a shopkeeper and you employ someone to work 8 while 4; then you expect them to work 8 while 4 - not 7 while 2pm!!
However, it would be like a flick of the domino's if the managers said tomorrow at our depot that they were going to hold everybody back till their finish time. I can imagine at least 90% of them won't have time to do the extra work indoors or the extra lapsing and absorption. And it will obviously be because they will actually be arriving to the office on time, taking breaks and not rushing round!! Where then is the scope for future lapsing, fewer posties and bigger rounds??
I also find it a tad ironic for a few that do rush round and finish early (will never be held back right to the bitter end) because they also end up doing overtime by helping out the managers for those that cannot manage their lapse!!
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I get what you're saying but in a business where you have say an 18yo covering the same duty that a 60yo covers where's the fairness in giving the younger fitter person extra work for the same hours. And that's nothing against the slower ones. That's why Royal Mail have the duties planned and timed so that its fair for everyone. If they start clocking or whatever it won't benefit Royal Mail as the runners will just slow way down.Jpro747 wrote:It's about working the hours you are paid. In a factory, unless its piece work, you are expected to work to the end of your shift no matter how many items you produce, and everyone gets the same pay whether they produce 1200 or 850. Source personnel experience of working in such a factory that had young, old, fit, disabled, dedicated and lazy workers.
