Three cheers for DW and Jeremy Corbin, bring on the left wingers and they can mount an ineffective opposition for the next 25 years - because that's what moderates mean when they talk about an electable Labour Party. IMO there's little point in chattering about equality unless you can become an electable movement to make it happen, I don't believe Corbin is the answer and I do think he is reminiscent of Michael Foot.

I really hope JC wins.dvbuk55 wrote:Three cheers for DW and Jeremy Corbin, bring on the left wingers and they can mount an ineffective opposition for the next 25 years - because that's what moderates mean when they talk about an electable Labour Party. The balance of power in the commons is changing, Labour lost virtually all of Scotland and despite being in a minority the SNP has managed to force the UK government into giving them much of what they want, despite loosing the independence referendum.
If labour does not attract the votes needed to get into power they can and will still influence power because we live in different times to the era of Michael foot. It is likely that the days of outright majority government could be (in the short term at least) a thing of the past. meaning that we would be more likely to get a coalition.
The Tories only won the last election because Scotland deserted the labour party, thinking that if they voted SNP they could work with Labour to introduce more socialist policies. Meanwhile the press scared some English voters into thinking that voting for Labour would mean that we would all be ruled by the SNP. Add in the fact that what Labour was saying was not really that much different than the Tories and bingo, you get a very slim Tory majority
.
Jeremy Corbyn is the only one who will challenge the Tories on real issues, and give a clear divide between Labour and the Tories. The latter part of the "New Labour " era allowed the Tories to guide the agenda, and therefore win the arguments on their terms. Ultimately that is why labour lost, in 2010.
At a time when the gap between rich and poor has increased exponentially (mostly under new labour), inequality has increased, Bankers continue to go unpunished for the real reason we have a debt problem, obscene austerity cuts on the poor, totally uncalled for attacks on our right to Strike and many other policies which take hard fought for rights and freedoms from us that we should expect in what is actually a very rich country. During this time new labour has largely failed to look after the people it was set up by and for.
Dave ward was spot on in this interview. I actually stopped voting labour after 1997 because I could see that Blair was sending labour along the same Tory policies that came before of helping turn workers into nothing more than a means to serve the ends of corporations to line their own pockets.
All I can say to anyone who thinks Jeremy could not win an election, is listen to some of his talks/ interviews, he speaks so much sense, and I believe he will be able to get this message to the electorate and hopefully inspire people to vote labour.

Re: Dave Ward Interview on You Tube
Corbin will never be electable because the electorate no longer subscribe to a socialist philosophy. As for the SNP deserting labour and holding 56 seats if you add that to the 232 seats labour has they would still not have won the election or come close. More likely the desertion from the Lib/Dems gave the Tories power. As for a coalition again I don't think that's likely after the last effort unless we have proportional representation.

Re: Dave Ward Interview on You Tube
When Dave, Gideon and the rest of the Tory-boys spout their nonsense in the media the average working Joe fully expects that he'll have nothing in common with the tw*ts, but when the latest batch of Labour figure-heads (up to and including this useless lump) also make you think that they don't inhabit the same world and that their "policies" on the contemporary big issues/problems aren't in line with any one you know or have heard speak, that's when you think "great, another generation of bleak, lack-lustre and socially-divisive Tory non-policies".

You have spelt Corbyn incorrectly.dvbuk55 wrote:Three cheers for DW and Jeremy Corbin, bring on the left wingers and they can mount an ineffective opposition for the next 25 years - because that's what moderates mean when they talk about an electable Labour Party. This isn't the Foot era socially or politically. I think these days that a strongly leaning left LP has a good chance if not better than a middle ground LP at electoral victory. That's because there are so many non-voters/stay at home voters that the LP could win a strong majority if Corbyn could get these people politically active and actually voting.
One major problem the LP have (and they certainly have it in Scotland) is they are seen as TOO much of the centre, essentially sharing Conservative policies on many issues. This prevents many left-minded individuals having any choice on polling day. Con or Lab they may as well be the same party (widely held belief) and so people stay at home. A LP far removed from Con ideology could encourage these voters out and they are of a sufficient number to alter the course of any GE.
Labour lost 40 seats in Scotland not just because of Scottish Nationalism but also because they are seen as being in bed with the Cons at Westminster. Many people all over the country feel the same and would NOT vote for a centre ground LP. Yes many would, but look at the turn out and percentages of 2015 GE:
Cons were voted to power on 36% of votes cast - by 25% of the population. So only 25% of eligible voters actually voted Conservative! Becoming more like the Tories is not the answer imo. The answer is giving people confidence in politicians again, do that and they will vote for you. Corbyn is the man to bring confidence and integrity back to politics in this Post-Clegg climate.
Oh and Thatcher may have been dodgy in NI and supported Regan on Nicaragua etc etc but Blair led us to a religious War in the Middle East which is now a major Global threat zone and a living hell for tens of thousands of civilians. So can you prove that a centre-ground LP in power is better than a principled LP out of power? When people utterly abandon their core and long-held principles in exchange for power (as Blair did) it means they are becoming dangerously unprincipled. Power is corrupting and first and foremost out politicians should be true to themselves. Blair led us into War and was blindly led by Bush because his priorities were remaining in power and creating a Priministerial legacy. A deeply principled politician, as Corbyn is, would not have taken us into Iraq the second time round.

Or could it be truer to say there is no socialist philosophy on offer from the major parties so 16 Million (36%) members of the electorate stayed at home?dvbuk55 wrote:Corbin will never be electable because the electorate no longer subscribe to a socialist philosophy.
Labour were only 2 Million votes behind the Cons.

Re: Dave Ward Interview on You Tube
Tell me when you think a truly socialist labour party was last in government. The "Citizen Smith" days of "power to the people" are long gone. The electorate are wise enough to see that regardless of rhetoric there will not be a return to the days of striking because the cat wasn't fed. People are better informed these days, so much so, they have become bored with politics.meercat wrote:Or could it be truer to say there is no socialist philosophy on offer from the major parties so 16 Million (36%) members of the electorate stayed at home?dvbuk55 wrote:Corbin will never be electable because the electorate no longer subscribe to a socialist philosophy.

The Tory party in the next five years will destroy the unions by making it too difficult for so called people power in a collective to be effective. They are looking at the %age required to call a strike and only today have announced check off for public bodies will cease and that's only the start, just imagine the CWU without it if it becomes more widespread. IMO check off should have been ditched by the union when they had the strength to hold the membership.

I agree
Privatisation is bad for us and also bad for our customers. The only thing it is good for are those making profits at the top
Profits and efficiency drive everything - not customer service!!
So that means cutting back on staff hours/numbers etc and raising postage for the customers. We might be shareholders but I would wager that our managers have a much bigger and better incentive than us when we lapse all these duties

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: Dave Ward Interview on You Tube
People I speak to who don't vote say they don't vote because all the parties are the same, meaning the Tories and Labour, lets face it, unless there is a coalition you can rule out the rest. I agree with them, vote tory, you get tory, vote labour you get watered down tories. Labour are supposed to stand up for the working man, the weak and the vulnerable, until they do, nobody will bother voting for them. The people of Scotland deserted labour because they wanted politicians who have their interests at heart, they see the Labout party as Tories. I see Labour as nothing but a bunch of Tories, have never voted for them in my life, have never supported them. They do not represent me. I hope Corbyn wins, I may join the party if he does. With someone like him at the helm they would at least look and sound like Labour. With all the attacks on workers rights and unions by this shower of out of touch pompous twats, I don't see how anyone can belong to a union and vote tory, not if you have a brain in your head.

Its not about whether the public support dogmatic socialist policies, its about sensible fair policies that Jeremy talks about in an honest and clear way. IMHO I think you are wrong that he will never be electable, it is quite possibly the opposite, people are fed up with spin doctors and sound bytes. Jeremy would be truly a breath of fresh air.dvbuk55 wrote:Corbin will never be electable because the electorate no longer subscribe to a socialist philosophy. I did not say that labour would have won if they had not lost the Scottish seats. It was more down to the concerted efforts of the right wing media to spin a lie that the SNP would somehow control Miliband. That ploy worked and scared off English swing voters.

He's reciting a socialist wish list flashman which is not the same as sensible policies, however I may be wrong, in which case I'll show my arse on the town hall steps at midday on the first Saturday he's in 10 Downing Street. The SNP would have held the controlling vote should Ed and they had sufficient seats to form a Government. People didn't vote Labour because they had nothing to offer and Ed wasn't a credible figurehead.Flashman_ wrote:Its not about whether the public support dogmatic socialist policies, its about sensible fair policies that Jeremy talks about in an honest and clear way. Re: Dave Ward Interview on You Tube
No-one was going to vote for Milliband in sufficient numbers anyway. Neither a conviction nor convincing spin politician, he always was just a spluttering lisping middle-class seat-warmer.
He may as well not have bothered doing that as his successor will be just another seat-warmer too, whichever one of them gets the nod.
Hopefully the labour Party will one day be able to offer a credible alternative to Dave and Co, but bearded old scruffs crapping on about building more council houses and renationalising this that and the other clearly aren't that.

In 1975 you may have asked when was a woman last PM and the Tories would then have not assigned Thatcher their leader. There are 1sts in politics all the time.dvbuk55 wrote: Tell me when you think a truly socialist labour party was last in government.
Corbyn is not as far as I can tell a hardline socialist, he does not want to nationalise the means of production. Or does he? I don't know. He's campaigning not on that but on this:

Re: Dave Ward Interview on You Tube
Evenn in this thread it appears the Corbyn supporters are full of hope and are crying out for change. The Anti ones are using put downs and ignoring or belittleing his policies.
Its the UK media writ small.
In my honest opinion Labour didn't lose because of Milliband, or the SNP. In fact the SNP won in Scotland for the very same reason Labour Lost. They didn't offer hope, change, or conviction. They used, and still are using, focus groups to decide policy, thats a careerist track and the public are fed up of careerists they wan't conviction politics.
Some believe that Labour had no major difference with the Tories over Austerity, Welfare, Tax or Education except on the degree or speed they wanted to implement their policies. They did not give the public a clear choice, the SNP did.
