Benefits of Long & Shorts?

What benefits do we as posties derive from working long & shorts?
If RM see it as filling all our contracted hours, I see it as us working a minimum of our contracted hours.

It's common sense. Not for posties benefit... We all have busier days and quieter day of the week, so why would RM pay you the same for each of those days?

We've got longs and shorts. It's a fvcking nightmare, for this simple reason: The lapsing is the same every day; so every shorter day, you have to argue the point that there isn't enough time to do any or all of it. Then you get "Well, there's not as much on today."
I've heard all that - Just tell em and that's it. - It's not that simple. Even the most headstrong get dragged into pointless debates, all in the hope of wearing you down. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it does varying damage: either ruining your day, or like the guy in the other post - off with stress.
We should be working the same length shift every day. I don't believe anyone who reckons that RM can't fill our shifts.

I don't really have a problem with doing it, however I do have a problem on a shorter day when I get extra to do and I simply don't have the time to do it. That's when the threats start because LM has to try and get someone else to do it.

If its a struggle to finish on time with the lapsing then you are basically left to your own devices to try and argue with your lino as to why you should have some taken off. It took us a few months before we eventually got a loop taken off the duty so you have to be quite persistent in your approach.

One of the reasons why it is quite important to try and finish on time every day! If you have been finishing early all week, and then on this one day its really busy, it can be quite difficult getting it taken off because your manager will just point this out and the fact that you need to be 'flexible'. Even if you go over your time and claim delivery excess 'overtime', in our office we run the risk of not getting paid IF we had finish early during the week. This is because our DOM keeps records of when you signed out and uses the days when you signed out early as leverage to why he won't pay you any overtime. If you forgot to sign out then they somehow assume that you finished early and don't get paid the overtime as well.

You might say that the managers simply want to have their cake and eat it but what staff have to realise is that Royal Mail is a business. So take your time and work all your hours and then you won't have a problem when you want some work taken off you.

We have shorter Mondays and Tuesdays, and do extra lapsing on those days. Usually there's no issues at all, especially on Tuesday when it's almost always ridiculously light on mail.
