Re: Unfair dismissal
When does the contract expire and what hours was the contract for. Asking you to go in whilst on sick looks a bit iffy. Are you in the union?

If you are on a long term (permanent) contract then he can't refuse to renew it because there is nothing to renew.
However, he can with objective, fair and reasonable reasons, end a trialist contract.
Simply being absent one day for a funeral would be difficult to justify. However because of the new rules you can't claim unfair dismissal until you have been employed 2 years, unless its a protected characteristic, for example on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation (in Northern Ireland, this also includes political beliefs)
Its is possible to dismiss someone for long term sickness but there are process that need to be followed. It is also possible to dismiss someone for an unreleated reason whilst they are on sick leave, but again the reason to dismiss whilst on sick leave has to be reasonabl, fair and subjective.
If you are not in the Union its going to be difficult tio fight it, do you have any Union Reps as friends. Or you could try Citizens Advice, ACAS or even a no win no fee employment solicitor.
