The other day, my nephew asked me about what happens to a letter from being put in a letter box to arriving on someone's mat.

I realised that I haven't got much of a clue, so mumbled something about it going into a sack, being put in a van, going to the mail centre and then out on a van and being delivered to the house it's addressed to.

I vaguely remember covering this on the induction but it made me realise I should know more about the job. Can any of you more experienced people enlighten me please?

A simple explanation to the operation would be,
The letter is picked up from the post box by van and taken to the local mail centre for processing.
The letter will go through the sorting process on the intelligent sorting machines (iLSM's) and compact sequence sorting machines (CSS's) and walk sorted for the particular delivery offices..
The walk sorted mail is forwarded on to the delivery office for delivery by the postman.
The postman will sort the walksorted mail into the walk frame and then take the mail out to the address for deivery.
