Can someone tell me if it's illegal to drive if they don't work?

No dont use it put a PMT in and refuse to drive it.If this van was taken for a MOT it would fail.Dont take any bull from manager telling you its legal to drive cause it ain"t.It would only be legal if there was not any reversing lights fitted as standard but there is so it is illegal cause you have them and there not working they have to work if fitted.

Hi i stand corrected but if there are reversing lights on a car/van then they have to work by law or you will get a fine.

A bit of background info; a driver had a minor collision with a car and RM decided to have an assessor come in to re-train the driver. This morning the assessor turns up and driver does vehicle check on Doblo. No reverse lights noted. Assessor asks for another van as he says Doblo 1 is illegal to drive. Vehicle check on Doblo 2 finds same problem. Assessor says both vans should not go on the road as are illegal. PMT 1 forms are filled in. Meanwhile assessor assesses driver for a couple of hours. Return to office and both Doblos are still in the yard. Manager is asked if there are any spare vans as both Doblos have been reported as unroadworthy. Manager phones another manager further up the food chain. Higher manager says they are ok to drive and also the maintenance workshop say they are ok to drive too. Same driver is expected to drive a Doblo with no reverse lights tomorrow. What should he do?

Road Vehicles Lighting Regs 1989 deals with Reversing Lights which it defines as " a lamp used to illuminate the road to the rear of a vehicle for the purpose of reversing and to warn other road users that the vehicle is reversing or about to".

It is an Optional lamp and therefore not covered by Reg 23 which deals with the maintainance in good and working order.

Schedule 14 list the characteristics:

Number - Not more than two
Position - no requirement
Size of illuminated area - no requirement
Colour - white
Wattage: no requirement if displaying an approved mark otherwise one lamp not to exceed 24 watts
Tel-tale - Only required if light is not automatically activated by selection of reverse gear.
So yes he can drive it but could just play at being an awkward bugger and ask manager to find the correct regs and refuse to drive until they have found them.

You're taking the vehicle out chap and you're signing for it. If you run someone over while reversing or damage something, you have signed for the vehicle and you are happy with a warning light being broken.

RM are more interested in the annoying b!tch whining at you 'please ensure the handbrake is applied before leaving the vehicle!' AFTER you've applied it, rather than vital things like reversing lights.

i believe if theres a light they all have to work but i doubt they will check reversing lights if pulled over anyway

I can assure you that if fitted they have to work. Same problem in our office, individual gave the managers the policeman's name and phone number whom he had contacted to ask for a definate answer, if they insisted he take it out he had to ring him.
