No contact pay stoppage

Someone from work has gone off sick and left a message with another employee but not actually contacted the manager himself. He has received a letter saying his pay has been stopped because he didn't contact the office. Is this allowed, even though he had left a message with someone else?

While the manager is being a knob stopping pay as sick is sick,your mate should of at least tried to contact said knob,did your mate try?

If you are too unwell to contact work then yes you can ask a family member or friend to contact work. Nothing wrong with being too unwell to be able to use a phone.

If someone is in a coma will they get in trouble because they don't phone in personally? I think not.

But if he has contacted a friend then he could of contacted work. U always have to ring the office or someone on your behalf to speak to someone in charge. Surely that's just obvious

From my experience ringing the office can be hit and miss with the DOM not in the office , doing packets or gone home early. If there is no answer machine what do you do

I was under the impression that if you do not turn up at work and you also fail to contact then they are supposed to try and contact you before stopping your pay. Many people live alone, what if you are in hospital and unable to make contact? I thought this was why they have to attempt to contact you. I think both parties have acted incorrectly.

The manager did try to contact the employee btw

I thought they had to write to you by recorded delivery if unable to contact you by phone? We had a manager call at an employees home after they had been unable to contact them, the employee was actually very ill in hospital. The manager in that case had acted correctly and not just stopped his money without trying to find out why. I think the problem is some of these managers shouldn't be managers, they are only a minority but they have no man management skills and are just bully boys, they get a rush when they get a bit of authority. Not all of them, some of them, the majority are trying their best.
