Is this happening in your delivery office??


Just today, everything was running smoothly indoors with the letters in the frame, then packets in the frame, then the second 2 trays of mech. I asked the manager if there were anymore van deliveries due in and he didn't know, so I asked DOM and he thought that was it. Mind you, they said that last week and then we got what looked like wave 3 of un-sequenced mail?!

A similar thing happened today. As we all start to tie-up and put mail into bags, we are then told "walk sorting" as another van turned up with full packet shroud and half a dozen trays of mail! WTF !

So why don't our managers appear to know what vans are coming in from the other depots? Are they not supposed to know the mail traffic forecasts? Also, apart from the initial work that we have to sort when we arrive, - why does all the other mail and packets arrive afterwards in fits and starts? For example, on some days, we can be sat around (or playing hopscotch when the mini shrouds have gone) for half an hour whilst a delivery van arrives. That mail gets sorted and then we are waiting for the next delivery. Why can't all the mail come as one load for us all to sort??

But then I realised...nobody had actually managed to leave the office before that last van came in, because they were waiting for specials (which have always been gunned in). Well, at least they do their best to keep the runners held back on the starting line......

If the mail all came in one load ready to sort then you would have winning and losing delivery offices, some poor delivery office would be last in that queue and not get any mail in till near enough 10am, would your office be willing to be that delivery office with a finish time of after 5? Or is playing hopscotch not whilst getting paid not sounding just as bad?

Yeah hopscotch, we also play pass the parcel (naturally) and hide and seek with the managers


And that was my point anyway, why don't the managers know when the mail deliveries /vans are due in???

Also for many DOs it would be physically impossible to fit all their work on a single van, some would need to be able to handle an arctic to receive all their mail in one go

If it's all been misted out then the DOm just needs to look at the relevant report/page on his computer to see what's coming in. If a DO is receiving unsequenced mail, chances are that there's been more mail to sequence then machine capacity. Your local MC will make sure that all DOs get upto about 24 boxes worth (before being sequenced) on wave 1. Wave 2 is generally very limited as to how many boxes can be run (generally a dozen absolute tops), to make sure that the time sensitive batches get out on time

Strange. In my MPU, management decided that in order to be able to have a later run from the mail centre, wave 2 could now be run on 20 minute batches as opposed to the 30 minute batches we were doing. If only the amount of mail had decreased to match it. Sometimes wave 2 batches are bigger than wave 1.

It's typical RM, plan everything using the best case scenario and remove any contingency to cope with the unexpected (or expected).

We have 3 7.5Tonne lorrys a day. One at 5:30, one at 7 one at 7:15
