2015 Graduate Scheme

Hi,
My friend's daughter has just been offered a position in the 2015 Finance Graduate scheme but unfortunately she only achieved a 2:2 in her degree instead of the 2:1 which was required. Could anyone tell me if her offer is likely to be withdrawn or whether they will let her continue, having passed the assessment centre etc. She is very anxious to know, but unsure whether or not to bring it to their attention now or wait until she is asked.

No point in waiting. Talk to the relevant people ASAP. You might as well tell them the situation because they will find out her grade eventually. Also, the position would have been offered with the condition that she got a 2.1.

The reason that they are ten-a-penny these days is that there are around three times as many "Universities" now as there were thirty years ago, meaning that it now seems like an obligatory rite of passage rather than an opportunity for the top 10-15% to excel. Personally I'd rather see a return to the old system where the bright ones got a (nearly) free education, rather than the current, corrupt system which seems to sell unattainable dreams to gullible but aspirational kids of near average ability.

Many thanks for your comments. I think that she understands only too well that graduates are ten a penny these days, that's why competition for jobs is so fierce, and why companies are almost compelled to stipulate a 2:1 in order to cut down the number of applicants. I have advised her to speak to them now and hope that they will not just look at her final degree (which is still a good degree, in a relevant subject, from a top ten University) but also at her A grade A Levels in Maths, Economics, and something else that I can't remember! Fingers crossed that they will not simply reject her because she does not tick a box.

Even if they do reject her, if she is really interested in making Royal Mail a career, there are opportunties for Posties to go into management. It may be a route worth looking at.

I graduated from university*, then college**!

* BEng (hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1999 (never managed to get into that as a career though).

** NC in Conservation 2011 & HNC in Countryside Management 2012 during career break / change of jobs following redundancy.
