Meal relief
What the offical brief on meal relief. I usually take 20mins half way through my duty and 20 mins at end. Our dom is now forcing all staff to take 20mins before going out on delivery. We have no canteen facilities in our office so it would mean sitting at your frame for 20mins.

Meal reliefs cannot be taken at the end of a shift. They must be taken away from your workplace............. heavens know how you are supposed to take the whilst pushing a trolley about. It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The second 20 minutes are not covered by the law they are contractual and can be taken at the end of the shift, also if taking them at end of shift there is no need to stay in office during it Soley for the purpose of booking off
additionally the dom can schedule when to take your breaks, if the office is not happy with any scheduling etc then they should follow the agreed ir process and lodge a stage 1 disagreement over it

They don't forget it's just that only 20 minutes of it had greater protection the second 20 minutes could even be removed completely by giving correct notice and it wouldn't be breaking any law, yes the union would fight to keep it etc but there is no legal protection of any break in excess of 20 minutes if you work more than a 6 hour shift

We've a postwoman who's been told that as she just wants to work to her time , that she will take her 40 minutes in the canteen every day after she's finished . She is bein penalised for struggling to do her duty in time , while runners get home early .

Re: Meal relief
That is completely against H&S legislation. Get the H&S on this they can tell her when to take a break but it has to be somewhere in the middle of the working day for at least the 20 minutes statutory break,Chelseablue wrote:We've a postwoman who's been told that as she just wants to work to her time , that she will take her 40 minutes in the canteen every day after she's finished . Re: Meal relief
I think the point here is that she says she cannot complete her duty, but wants to leave the office 40 mins early because 'she has not taken her break'. That's why she is being made to have her break at the end, so that she is not cutting off and then leaving early.
Although, she should take her break in the middle of the day, I agree, but essentially, she wouldn't be leaving any earlier

Your right she also should comply with the H&S recommendation. In fact if thats the case she is quite lucky, as breaks should be taken in the middle of the working day, management can certainly argue a reasonable case that they understood she had taken her breaks as per the Walk Log/318 and give her another 40 minutes work. Her best interests are to take a break and come back on time.
Ps 318s do exists they are various forms that make up some of the walk log.

Re: Meal relief
Think the point here is the whole office has probably agreed to take whole meal relief at the end, rightly or wrongly, it happens in quite a few offices. They're forcing her alone to stay behind and take meal relief because she has the audacity to cut off. Sound like bullying to me. Surely whole office should be made to stay behind, not just one person.Bishbashbbosh wrote:I think the point here is that she says she cannot complete her duty, but wants to leave the office 40 mins early because 'she has not taken her break'. Re: Meal relief
In offices where full timers take their break of 20 or 40 mins before delivery - what do part time staff on 5/6 hours do for their break when partnered with a full timer as the middle of the part timers shift is later in the day?
