Had a look on MRM regarding sun/heat and noticed this.

Cover up – Wear long, loose clothing to keep the sun off your skin. Your uniform is made from a special fabric to protect against ultraviolet radiation.

Don't know about anyone else but my shirts say 55% cotton 45% polyester. So what is this special fabric?

That's good ammo for lawyers when the first case of skin cancer occurs.

Skin cancer does not occur over night. It is generally a slow process and it would be very difficult to lodge a claim against your employer, as you can just as easily be affected during your social hours as you are at work. That said, Royal Mail do not attempt in any way to protect delivery staff against not only skin cancer, but what can be even more serious is dehydration, fatigue, especially for those who are in their later working years and do not have the general levels of fitness to deal with being out in the sun for 4, 5 and even 6 hoiurs at a time.

Is there any employer in this day and age that gives a flying fcuk about their employees. There are some that purport to reward their staff for good and loyal service, but only if you are prepared to "go the extra mile" "not be a clock watcher" and work hours in excess of that for which you are paid. My brother was a soldier during the war in Aden and was diagnosed with skin cancer a few years ago,the consultant put it down to his service in Aden and he was awarded over £5000 in compensation ,I myself am a veteran and I know of quite a few old timers of my regiment that served in Palestine who have skin cancer and in all there cases they have received compensation so about 20 or 30 years in the future when high numbers of postmen and women are coming down with this dreadful disease we too will be in a similar situation.

Hope your right DB, but £5000 compo is a very small amount compared to what you have to face with this disease. I have suffered with malignant melanoma which is a skin cancer. I have had several operations to remove the affected areas on my back. That is ok,but what has effected me most is the fear of being out in the sun, being uncomfortable with being in swimming pools where the scarring is open to the sun and to people looking at you differently. Yes I know you can wear a tee shirt in the pool, but that takes away the pleasure of being able to swim with freedom and no fear of what might reoccur.

They did a good job with my brother,it took about 2 years in total his was on his nose and cheek,skin grafts off his thigh and bum,he's a robust fella and says if people stare at him that's there problem,but I must admit it has changed him a bit,but he has a great strategy if people mention it,he says 1 in 3 people will go on to develop a type of cancer,this is mine and they have caught it and dealt with it what is your's ?,that tends to shut people up,in a way Lincox you are in a better positon than a lot of people,you know about this horrible disease and will be able to recognise any reoccurance god forbid,how many people will be living in blissful ignorance,my brother has to go back for regular check ups and therefore that gives him great piece of mind that any problems will be quickly spotted.I'm not the best at explaining things and I hope this makes a bit of sense.

Perfectly, I also get a 6monthly check up for the rest of life. The hospital took photographs of my entire body (poor feckers who look at them) and they check any change in moles etc and check for any occurrence of change in the lymph nodes, so I have now gone 8 years since last op and hoping this will continue.

My colleagues laugh at me because even after wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts for over a month I am still predominantly white, I get asked why I am so white, the secret is I suffer from prickly heat, so from April onwards I suffer if I expose my skin to the sun, so it's factor 50 all over the exposed areas for me

If you have a mole keep an eye on it, if it starts to get bigger, gets a crust or starts to itch, then get to a doctor ASAP, my wife had to have one removed from her face, they caught it in time, so it was a quick job with the laser, and no real depth to it, now you can hardly tell there was work done there.

Others who have had more serious forms will know what treatment that form takes.
