Quick question, is there a shift allowance payable for a 4am start?

Certainly is approx £23 if starting at 0400 or approx £13 if starting at 0401!!

Start- monday 0450
- tuesday 0500
- wednesday 0404
- thursday 0514
- friday 0800

Will i be due any allowances, since this new agreement came in and we lost our allowance with the d2d thing, nobody is certain what we are due.

Found this on the Way Forward Agreement someone was good enough to give the link for on one of my questions. Guess the figures may be out of date, but presumably it means there would still be allowances paid.

There will be assigned shift allowances, paid all-year-round including during holidays and short-term sickness (periods up to two months), for jobholders with attendances as follows:

Dawn shift (starts between 0201-1400) = £20.40 per week fully pensionable
Early shift (starts between 0401-0500) = £10.71 per week fully pensionable
Early shift (starts between 0501-0530) = £5.36 per week fully pensionable
Evening shift (finishes between 2000-2139) = £15.30 per week fully pensionable
Late shift (finishes between 2140-0159) = £31.62 per week fully pensionable
Night shift (three hours worked across 2300-0500) = £61.20 per week (of which £31.62 is pensionable and the remainder non-pensionable, balancing against the higher basic pay)
Split duties (conditioned hours of a single contract £8.67 pw if total span over 10 hours,
Involving two daily non-continuous attendances, £17.34 pw if total span over 12.5 hrs,
Covering at least four days or nights of the week) £25.50 pw if total span over 15 hours.

(All of the above times are inclusive. Only one allowance may be claimed for any given conditioned attendance, except that Split Duties will be paid Split Duty Allowance plus the highest of any appropriate shift allowances)

The allowances that were lost with the new agreement was ESA 1& 2...

Early shift (starts between 0401-0500) = £10.71 per week fully pensionable
Early shift (starts between 0501-0530) = £5.36 per week fully pensionable

So the one below still stands...

Dawn shift (starts between 0201-1400) = £20.40 per week fully pensionable

I get the 4am shift allowance of £23 although my earliest start is 4.10.

Quick question regarding this, if I move on to a 5am start duty permanently would I loose the allowance or still keep it under 'grandfather rights'. Guy I work with seems to think I would but I don't see why.

As far as i'm aware you would not retain "grandfather rights" on your dawn shift allowance but you would be entitled to 3 years pay protection...that's my take on it anyway.

That only applied to those already in receipt of grandfather rights ...they lost £12.37 of it to RM...if you could call that an agreement.

Following the introduction of the new basic pay supplements, it became apparent that employees previously in receipt of Dawn Shift Grandfather Rights’ payments held as a result of the 2007 Pay and Modernisation Agreement, had these payments ceased and subsumed into the new basic pay supplements.

The Union has raised this issue with Royal Mail and we can now confirm the following:-

Royal Mail has agreed to reinstate the difference between the previous Dawn Shift Grandfather Rights’ of £23.55 and the previous Early Shift One payment of £12.37 per week. This ensures parity of treatment.

Therefore, employees receiving Dawn Shift Grandfather Rights’ payments before they were ceased in June, will now receive an additional £11.18 per week on a personal rights basis.

So going by this then, my duty starts at 06.00 but I'm in on O/T from 04.45/05.00 each morning, should I be entitled to early shift allowance? I've been doing the O/T at these hours for the last 3/4 years.

No ESA 1 and ESA 2 were withdrawn IIRC in the 2007 agreement, the hours you quoted would put you in the ESA 1 bracket. Dawn Shift Allowance is for shirts starting between 0201 and 0400 IIRC.
