Branch approval for Royal Mail conduct code

A new Royal Mail conduct code will be introduced across the business in the coming period after a CWU branch ballot overwhelmingly endorsed an agreement negotiated with the business.

The set of procedures were the result of several months' detailed discussions between the union's senior national team and their Royal Mail counterparts, which were then endorsed by the CWU industrial executive and explained to reps at a national briefing in London last month.

Only three of the union's postal branches opposed the agreement, while 69 expressed support and the new arrangements will now be introduced, along with appropriate training, during the coming weeks.

Ray Ellis Commenting on the result, CWU assistant secretary Ray Ellis said: "We're pleased that the new conduct code received such an overwhelming endorsement from our branches and it's our hope that these procedures will contribute to improving workplace relations right across the business."

The objectives behind the changes were, Ray explained, "to update and humanise the language and the methods used, and specifically to place an emphasis on informal resolution where possible."

Other improvements include earlier access to documents, reductions of timescales and delays, an end to unjustified suspensions, and to the use of untrained personnel in disciplinary proceedings.

"There are a range of improvements within these new procedures and there are also a series of built-in joint reviews to ensure that the protocols are being introduced correctly and to identify and, hopefully, iron out, any problem areas," Ray pointed out.
