FORECASTING OVERTIME

Post by dodgyinlaws »

Got a new D.O.M, he has instructed his line managers to get a forecast on how much overtime we may claim if we are likely to go beyond our conditioned hours on delivery. I have no problem with that, but our line manager is saying to us that if we don't put our forecast down we won't get paid, he is also saying we have to approach and tell him, not him approaching us and asking us. Anybody had issues with this?

you seem to have issues with your managers asking you legitimate questions last time you didnt want to be questioned now you have an issue when they wont approach you and question you.

simply follow the correct over running deliver procedure and inform your manager at the earliest opportunity that it becomes apparent that you will be unable to complete your duty within you allocated hours. he will probably ask how much you wont be able to complete just tell him what you think you wont be able to complete he will then make a decision on how to get that mail delivered either by getting someone else to do it or pay you or someone else overtime its his decision on how to get that mail delivered

In general I say I'll cut off but I can do roughly X hours and book X*1.5 hours if they want me to. i.e. I will only do excess for time and a half.

With no pension contribution and a slightly lower pay rate and no break allowance and having just done an 8 hour shift I'm not stressing myself so they can winge at me for booking 45mins excess.

I have no issue with been questioned by a line manager who i can talk and listen to, but this manager is totally unapproachable,he is covering for the regular line manager who is off sick, who is approachable and treats the staff with respect, he gets the same respect in return. The unapproachable manager would'nt recognise the "correct over running deliver procedure" so i and OTHERS are wasting our time approaching him about it.

You might not like the manager but you still have to follow the correct approach. Most offices use the same method, you go to the manager to inform him of what the situation is; and he takes it on from there. It really cannot be any other way; why would the manager come to you to ask you whether you will be over-running? Unless the mail is so so late or there is a weather issue or an act of god that everyone is affected, then he will have to make an announcement.

You can always over-forecast and then revise down... But if you have a good enough manager, you might have a reasonable guess but if you go well beyond your guess because of other factors or because you do not know the round that well to make an accurate forecast then there should be no problem to revise up.

There is a column on the overtime sheet to write it down. Date, Duty number, Name, Pay Number, Time out, Estimated Overtime, Actual, Reason, Finish Time, Managers Signature.

Seems to work for them. I put one hour down every day.

Started going on at ours again in the last few months, five times I have been refused excess OT pay the last being an hour I did recovering someone else s mail. Now I don't work over at all.

How can you be refused overtime if the dom has agreed to pay it before you went out?

I don't understand the logic behind 'no overtime'. So either the mail gets delivered by you on overtime or by someone else on overtime (which takes even longer), or the mail fails and possibly goes out the next day - on overtime!

RM seem more concerned about cutting hours instead of doing what they're supposed to do - deliver mail on time

It's just come in at ours last week, so we haven't had the chance to find out whether the OT will be paid yet, even though the line manager assured us it was to allocate the budget to pay it. I'm sceptical until I crack the wage slip open.

It is just history repeating itself Zx. The same thing happened in ours about 4 years ago along with a lot of other stuff. Dom agreeing to pay just to get the mail out the door, then refusing to pay up. It went on for ages then the sit hit the fan. That Dom was moved on from ours though is still at a local office. Thing is this is no different to banking the OT. We get ripped off and the Dom gets an enhanced bonus for reducing his budget...nice little earner.

Believe it or not Employers do not have to pay their employees for overtime

So it is very probable that you have agreed with your line manager to be paid overtime for going over for that day, booked it and then found you're short next week because the DOM has had other plans!!

Truth is, even if they lapse 12 duties a day in one office, they must know that they are able to cover it all. I have not heard of many delivery failures in the last 6 months. They do tend to bully you into submission into taking all the workload out; but if you want to work your hours and not do all the extra work they have set for you; its down to you to ask the manager to get some taken off.

Sometimes, when the boss wants me to work my day off I try and arrange to get a day off booked in lieu - which can work to my advantage, especially when I know the boss doesn't generally like to pay overtime to show to his superiors (at least on paper) that he his managing his office budget

Erm how so you figure that one out? If they don't pay you for overtime worked it's unlawful deduction of wages and thus breaking the law
