They 'No' votes against independence was split amongst all the other parties whilst the vote for Independence is almost a solid vote for SNP. Moreover, SNP is actually in government in Scotland and they are doing well and lastly even some of the No voters must have been a bit miffed with all the talk about English votes for English MP and a stepping back from some of the promises the big parties made after the referendum.

Lastly, 'ajockalypse now' and the general anti-Scottish sentiments especially from the Tories, the Tory gutter press and others, the 'posters' and the fear mongers and loathing must have driven more people to vote for SNP.

But Labour are still always going to be better for the 'real' working people than the Tories. The Tories believe in work as long as they are not doing the hard graft, and as long as the wages are low or some foreigners are being exploited. The Tories are also for immigration as long as it is not for people that can come here and start claiming straight-away or people that know their rights and those that soon become as benefit and wage savvy as the locals - most of the EU migrants know the score and know how to play the system...

Anyways, what is it with Alan Johnson - a man a lot of lefties tend to laud as one of us. He might have been in postie in past life but he is a signed up member of the Tony Blair'sNew Labour (or Tory-Lite).

He suggests that Labour goes back to the Tony Blair's winning formula but that only worked because labour completely shifted onto the centre ground that used to be partially occupied by the Tories, and he was lucky we were in great economic boom (which allowed him and Gordon Brown to spend and spend and become luvvies with the Financial Sector, Multi-nationals and big Media Corps.

The Tony Blair formula will not work because of the current economic situation, also there is no personality like Blair in the labour party currently (and he had weak opposition in Major, IDS and Willie Hague and even DC). More importantly, if the Labour party goes back to the Tony Blair era then they will be just like the Tories - so why vote for a pretend Tory party when people can vote for the real thing.

This country is not as Liberal as it used to be - in fact, it is always been more Conservative than Labour or Lib Dems; Labour has only been lucky to be in power because people get fed up of the same party in power and they have been lucky enough to retain the votes in the North and Inner cities as well as Scotland. With Scotland gone, there is no chance for Labour for the next 10 years or even more unless something serious happens to the country and the Tories.

The next Labour leader will be contesting against Boris Johnson! What are the chances? :thumbdown

The Liberal Democrats are almost dead and there is very little point of them now - they used to be half way between the Greens and Labour but the country has whole-hearted rejected the left, so :wave. Labour too has an existential threat - what are they now going to stand for when a lot of working people have rejected them and do not trust them with money (wrong! imo). Labour probably need to change its name - it is a bit out of touch these days and we should stop paying part of our subs to the Labour government. And next time, the Unions should keep their noses out of Labour Leadership Contest :whistle

You are right with one part of your post when you say there is no personality like Blair in the current labour party! As he single handedly took away all british values & gave them away to the rest of the world! He totally wrecked britain for good & thats why labour voters now vote for party's like ukip in their millions, labour did so badly as ed milliband was a complete jerk with no life experience at all & they keep banging on about the eu being so good for british people wjen we know its not & want out!
I predicted labour were finished before the election & am so happy i was right, without scotland & the millions of lost votes to ukip & tory's they will struggle to stay the main opposition in the next 5 years. & with all the in-fighting that will go on between the huge number of trash they have in the party they will do well to stay afloat at all! But hey,one can only hope ay!

Somehow, Blair managed to win 3 elections; so what does that say about the British Electorate?

So is it just about personality or just like I said, this country is more 'Conservative' than 'Progressive or 'Social Democratic'. Blair was there at a time of economic Boom; he and Gordon Brown were just as much to blame for the mess; not just Ed Miliband. By the way, at a time of economic boom, the Tories and most electorate were just as happy to allow Labour to spend and allow mass immigration; because it favoured them financially.

The Tories will not have been much different if they had been in power when Blair was there; the only exception is that there would have been less public spending and less give-aways (at least not to all and sundry but just their kind or those perceived to be aspirational - whatever that means).

The Tories hierarchy are also pro-EU but like I said, they will have tried to just exploit the cheap labour but when you are in, then you are in all the way; there is no halfway house (except limiting the in-flux straight-away - Labour's fault entirely). However, when an immigrant takes root, the exploitation will eventually decline as we have now seen. What tends to happen is the immigrants work really hard for 5-7 years and after that, they will have sorted things and themselves out, they will bring more and more people and they will soon take over because they do not have the restrictions the locals have.

In addition, they will have created a reputation for been harder working than locals and they will soon start to be favoured by business (and the aspirational types - mostly middle classes and typical conservatives). We now have Agencies with offices in most of the big Eastern European countries, and jobs are not even advertised on these shore any more...

Labour and Liberal Democrats are too pro-Europe and immigrants, and too righteous and sanctimonious about it that the will just not listen or see the effects of mass migration on people at the lower levels of the economic ladder. The Tory are marginally better and they are ready to listen at least to dissenting voices but they have been forced to listen even more with the rise of UKIP and now the SNP.

Ed Miliband is a son of a migrant (understandable as his dad is a refugee not an economic migrant) and Clegg has many nationalities in his blood including marrying a Spanish. However, this does not mean they should not be able to discuss immigration and see some of the negatives, at least. Nigel Farage is married to a German and that does not stop him!
