After a few days to reflect on becoming the new General Secretary of CWU, I am honoured to have been elected to this role although I am still trying to take it all in.

I have been overwhelmed by the amount of people who have contacted me with their kind comments and best wishes for the future.

I cannot thank those who worked so hard to get me elected enough, or the membership who have placed their trust in me to lead our Union in facing the challenges of the future.

I also want to thank Billy Hayes. Although we have had different views over this election and the future of our organisation, I fully respect the positive and major contribution he has made to our Union and the wider Labour movement over many years. In the coming weeks, it is important that his contribution is properly recognised by the whole Union and I and others will ensure this happens.

I take up the General Secretary role on the 1st June and between now and then I will be talking with and listening to people within our Union and thinking a lot about what our priorities need to be.

Becoming General Secretary of one of the biggest Unions in the UK is a great honour that comes with an even greater responsibility.

Let me assure everybody, I will work hard to unite the CWU in dealing with the industrial and political challenges that lie ahead and I will work hard to deliver on the commitments I have made during this election. In June it will be the beginning of a new era in the history of our Union. Let’s all pull together and move forward in the best interest of all CWU members.

Dave mate, you HAVE got to get out there, sitting in your " ivory tower" don't mean jack, YOU NEED to re-engage with the Members, just with this result and the % that DID not VOTE should concern you big time, I am glad for you to be elected but there needs to be action from the top, not reaction as this has proved to be a no brainer in the past, we at this pivotal time need Leadership not the same old s**t, gather the troops around you, get real and VISIT the offices that have given YOU this mandate and start re-building
