It’s been a long three year journey, but the team at Manchester North West delivery office can finally celebrate their success after being awarded Bronze status by a World Class Mail audit.

The before and after scorecard for the unit is impressive, with Special Delivery rates now at 99.09% compared to 96% three years ago. First-time delivery rates are now tracking at 92.78%, an increase of 10% over just one year, and DOM Peter Kelly is especially proud of the site’s Lost Time Accident free days record, which currently stands at 1.208.

Safety lead and CWU rep Geoff Hughes says: ‘We have concentrated on a few core issues such as road traffic collision, dog bites during school holiday periods and slips and trips. We have also introduced innovative learning sessions, for example a dog warden talked to us about canine behaviour.’

Parcel sorting

One major achievement is the way the team has reorganised parcel sorting. After moving from drop bag fittings to mini yorks, they initially had one big bullring, but it quickly became clear that another solution was necessary.

WCM champion Naeema Mohmed says: ‘We asked the staff to figure out the optimum way of working and developed three mini bullrings where each person has their own workspace.’

Peter adds: ‘We don’t have any quick fixes here. We work together to understand the root cause of an issue and then trust each other to fix it. Once staff started to see things changing for the better and how they could be integral, they became advocates. Change is now just a way of working for us – we embrace it.’

It's died a death in our office thankfully, they used to bang on about it all the time. Stupid bloody pictures being drawn up stuck up all over the place, nonsense graphs, now nothing and nobody cares. Not even the managers.

Who cares,it's the biggest waste of money ever inflicted on the poor sods ,whose offices have been press ganged ,sorry volunteered to be part of it. It has gone the way of all the other stupid ideas this business has. I mean,for crying out loud, they can't even perform their core function in some offices. Hopefully it will die a deserved unloved and unlamented death quickly.

Did the CWU at national level not ask the membership to withdraw from WCM?
Why is this office and any other office still co-operating with this load of s**t

Part of the deployment of the Agenda For Growth agreement included a review of Employee Engagement Initiatives, snuggled quietly in amongst this was of course a review of World Class Mail.

HQs policy on World Class Mail is to keep quiet and hope it goes away before the members start asking difficult questions. There certainly isn't any embargo on it anymore and given the fact that the AFG has basically turned the whole union/employer relationship into bit of a a lovefest I doubt you'll find any support at 150 The Broadway for "holding the line".

To be fair when you read these nuggets (Remember Cardiff!) you get the impression that there are a serious amount of seriously stoooopid screws,colleagues and reps about.
And I sure well would be seriously embarrassed if my office was featured.

Usually what happens with these things is 5 guys out of about 100 wet themselves over WCM, the rest of the staff don't get involved, along come the WCM knobs handing out the good job/well done stickers then in pops the courier for a couple of pics of smiling faces and a soundbite or two, meanwhile the world keeps turning.

It isn't really real, it doesn't really reflect on the unit and no...my office hasn't been done.
