Resign and Seniority
We are due to have a resign at our office within the next few months and I was just having a chat with our floor manager to find out how far down the list I was(baring in mind we do not have van share yet). He told me it would all be based on whether or not each individual is willing to be a driver( once van share comes in) meaning that someone for example with 8 years service and willing to be a driver will have first pick over someone who has 10 years service and not willing to be a driver. Can this be right?

Re: Resign and Seniority
What is "right" is whatever your office decides to do.
Seniority in its purest form goes out the window with van share, so what you do is up to you,
A non driver with 10 years can't pick a duty, if the partner who has already picked is also a non driver.
A driver with one year could in theory then pick into that pairing.
If you don't have the skill or aren't prepared to use it you lessen your options.

Re: Resign and Seniority
on the flip side, its quite likely i'll lose my duty soon, i only started driving because the duty on offer was paired with a non-driver.
if i end up back as a reserve, the reason i refused to drive in the first place, can i ask to be taken off the list?

If you don't want to drive anymore just wait until they do the licence checks then conveniently 'lose' your licence..korky wrote:on the flip side, its quite likely i'll lose my duty soon, i only started driving because the duty on offer was paired with a non-driver.

Re: Resign and Seniority
Come on! As long as one of them can drive... Posties did not need to be able to drive in the past - so they cannot be overtly discriminated upon because of their inability to drive.
However, those that can drive refusing to drive is one I cannot abide by; they allow others to take the stress of driving. In addition, I do not agree with the concept of drivers and passengers; P&L was not really designed for posties to have defined roles like driver or passenger, it should be a flexible situation...
As a reserve, I am sometimes driving or not driving or even driving part way or at the start (lapse) or the end (to park van). Our loops are also designed to be mostly equal - so no real drivers loop apart from situations where you have dead walks or one has to break off because the loops are not conjoined...

Only one person is allowed to drive the van unless you are filling in the log book and doing a set of duty vehicle checks every time you switch driverschrisj wrote:Come on! hence why i never drove when i was a reserve, they get shat on most weeks regardless, chrisj wrote:However, those that can drive refusing to drive is one I cannot abide by; they allow others to take the stress of driving. if i'm pushed back to being a reserve then if they want my flexibility of being a driver then they can pay me extra, no driving means it cuts the odds off being switched everyday when someone goes sick.
why should a posty who cannot drive get better treatment than one who can?

Re: Resign and Seniority
Since P&L, can you point me in the direction of the document that says only one person can drive the van?Only one person is allowed to drive the van unless you are filling in the log book and doing a set of duty vehicle checks every time you switch drivers
BTW, you have also given a way to get 2 posties driving the same van during the same shift... You get some pendants coming up with that statement time and time again but it is not how it actually works or meant to work.
Why do you need to keep doing a van check? Most drivers do not even do the full van check to start with. You have been in the same van so you know what is going on? So what if you have to endorse the logbook?
So your driver has an emergency then what? You have 2 keys and can both drive, so share the driving instead on one person having to do the driving all the time. You do not have to share driving on the same day but can alternate...

Re: Resign and Seniority
Why are you calling me a pendant, there is no need to resort to name calling because someone has a different point of view.As regards to two people driving the van on P&L on the same day ask your DOM what are the rules and legality on it. Yes you can drive on alternate days but that was not what you said in your original post.chrisj wrote:Since P&L, can you point me in the direction of the document that says only one person can drive the van?Only one person is allowed to drive the van unless you are filling in the log book and doing a set of duty vehicle checks every time you switch drivers

Re: Resign and Seniority
re OMV checks, this is business policy that when someone other that yourself has driven the vehicle you must perform at least a duty check.
There may be 2 sets of keys out on delivery but this is so one does not have to wait for the other to gain access to the rear of the van or to the passenger seat to wait.
More importantly if you should fall foul of the law the business is compelled to show control over its vehicles and it cannot do this by saying these 2 were driving it.
As a member of the union i am constantly reminded to "do my job properly" so when planning the duties having 2 people moving as van around a deliverywould not have formed part of the planning.
in regard to refusing to drive, of course you can however, you can but you cannot drive this month or year and then not the next. The business won't tollerate it and (at least where i am) the union won't support it, and to me this sounds reasonable. So you either are or you're not.

Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP
