yes you are right, an acting line manager cannot be a workplace coach.
They are 2 totally different things, & will interfere with doing either job correctly.

i see the rep as the best person for the job, whoelse better to train new starters to do the job properly & most would prefer to be coached by their rep than a wanna be manager trying to climb the greasy pole.

that's assuming you have a rep that is actually interested in doing any coaching, and not just in it for the money

But then you would have problem if in for meeting for conduct or absence due to an injury etc where you may be trying to claim you were not trained properly, rep would probably not be fighting your corner if he was the guy you were trying to blame for poor training, it's better that it's someone who is not a rep or management or has aspirations of both

Managers of any flavour as coaches is a definite no, says so in the agreement.

IR reps as coaches in my opinion is a no, definite conflict of interest, same goes for a sub rep if they cover for the IR rep.

H&S rep, probably a decent enough idea considering a lot of the coaching relates to H&S, it's also a good way to introduce newbies to the union and the old chesnut of "doing the job properly".

Of course if said coach/rep is a useless fecker/management pet it really makes no difference but that begs the question...why is he/she your rep?
