time off for carers
My partner last week had brain tumor diagnosed. Awaiting referral to specialist neurosurgeon. Nhs delays. She is very frightened and cant be left alone for fear of seizure or blacking out. I have arranged next two weeks off bringing forward annual leave to be by her side. Does anyone know of RMs policy on special leave, flexible arrangements to help me be with her during this difficult time

I do believe you should be OK and that there IS provision somewhere for your unfortunate scenario. I have a colleague with a new-born who has some serious health issues and I know he's been looked after with time off to cope with his equally unfortunate situation.scatwoofer wrote:My partner last week had brain tumor diagnosed. As to chapter and verse I'll let the more knowledgeable quote that, like TBT. There may also be legal rights outside RM's control too for this.
Whichever, best wishes with her treatment and recovery.

As a carer you are entitled to emergency leave/reasonable amount of time off if you have worked there for over a year (whether paid or unpaid). For example, if the person you are caring for falls ill or has an accident
But you should ask them about different working arrangements with regards to flexible start and finish times. They have already given you flexible holidays to fit in with alternative care arrangements so why not ask them if you could have compressed working hours (where you work your normal hours in a short time - fitting 5 days work into 4 days perhaps) or do job sharing/part-time work.
Your manager should offer you full support and if you require compassionate leave or a career break, they should be able to grant you it

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Also if this situation persists for a prolonged period and RM aren't paying full or any pay, be sure to claim a 'carer's allowance' from the DSS which you would be entitled to if the alternative to your home caring would be a hospital or other care facility.

If the tumour is cancerous then although you don't have the condition, you are covered by the Equality Act by association.
See if your Branch has a disability champion who can advise you of your rights.
