Delivery points

Do all properties including businesses and especially public houses have to provide a suitable delivery access point, or can places like public houses seal up there letter boxes, forcing you to go into the premises, which adds extra time to my day ?

I'm not being petty, but I have used the letter box on a certain public house for the past ten years, now it has new owners, they have sealed the letter box up.

So just because there was a letter box previously should not affect the way you treat the new business. Presently, If someone new (or have not done the round before) comes on your round and finds a sealed letter box then that postie will have to go into the building...

Its one of those things with some businesses - as long as the business is open and you do not have to start traipsing round the building or going up the stairs and using lifts (sometimes, you have to) then, go in and find a suitable place to leave the mail (usually reception desk or somewhere/someone in the foyer).

Just explain to them that your delivery time may not always coincide with when they are open and because they have now sealed the letter box up you may have to return their mail to the office.

That is not possible. The door that had the letter box is not used for public access and has always been a locked door. The public access is at the rear of the pub.
So if for any reason someone who is not familiar with that pub won't know where to take the mail.

Customers are allowed to seal their letterbox if they provide an alternative delivery point so you're probably going to have to swallow it, you could speak to your planner to have the delivery point moved on georoute but......

And just for reference having done businesses for years, when they complain all hell tends to break loose...it's generally something you want to avoid.

I have to point out that a reasonable postie will have to walk around the pub to find out where to deliver the mail... Pubs usually have more than one entrance as well as side entrance for pub workers and.or delivery of barrels and other bigger items.

I used to deliver to a Rugby club that had a letter box on the gate but they removed the letter box meaning one now has to enter the Rugby club and walk all the way round pass the pitch to the front to the Pavilion - about 200 or 250 meters down a slope to the front of the building and back...

I think it is just a bit of frustration because they have inconvenienced the postie - but they are within their rights (they can easily remove the letter box)...

We have also had the same with a school that insist that the outside letter box is just for when they are not open or during the holidays.

Some posties ignored the request to bring the letter into the school office - involving, pressing a buzzer, walk through to the school building and then hopefully they will let you out as you get to the get or you have to reach over to press the buzzer again.

Complaints from the School and now all Posties are fully compliant...

Might be a silly suggestion but in the day when we delivered earlier a pub on my walk didn't have a letterbox and was shut when i got there but as is usual with some old buildings you could slide the letters under the door, maybe worth a try.
