grandparent death

Post by jason1984 »

Hi,was just wondering if anyone can tell me what the policy is regarding a bereavement in the family,my gran passed away today in Dublin and the funeral is next week, was just wondering if they can refuse me time off for funeral as there are 16 people off in my office on sick leave already, and I would need two days off for it as funeral is Wednesday morning so would need the Tuesday and Wednesday off. Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure you would get it. TBT did post a while back the rules/caveats applied when there is a bereavement and how close the relative is to you, i.e. brother/father/mother etc. I think you can request unpaid absence, but don't quote me on it. I'm sure someone will put you (and me!) straight soon enough.

Bereavement: If an employee loses somebody close to them, be supportive, sensitive and accommodating,
giving them time to deal with their loss. The amount of time required will vary depending on the relationship
and the circumstances of the bereavement. For immediate family members (spouse, partner, sibling,
child, parent), offer up to one week off with full pay. For other family members (e.g. grandparents or
parents-in-law), offer a paid day off to attend the funeral. For wider family and friends, help to facilitate
shift-swaps, agree for the employee to make the time up, or offer one unpaid day off/one day
of holiday to attend the funeral

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I was given a day off for the funeral for a grandparent, this was paid, and was not taken off my leave. I think this was fair

think we need some clarity on this issue as most offices seem to operate differently. don,t think even hq know what the special leave agreement is.

aiden01, we've had this discussion before and i don't think it's clarity that's needed, the agreement is there. What we need is managers to read it and peeps to ask for it.

jason1984, read the document at the link that Teebs quotes and it is quite clear.
If need be, print off the bits that you need and take them in to show your manager.
It's bad enough having a bereavement in the family without all this crap as well.

I was told that in my office you wont get a day off for a grandparent's death, which is stupid because obviously you want to go to the funeral to support your mom/dad as much as anything. I was told that if you want to go, to call in sick and not mention it to anyone else.

On the guidance they have missed this bit out...
For a more distant relative e.g. parent in law, grandparent, aunt, uncle- one day with pay.
But the LTB states:
This is a Royal Mail document but the union has been consulted on the content. We continue to have some reservations on the wording of the “bereavement” bullet point on page 3 but it should be emphasised that if there is any conflict with the relevant Royal Mail policy statement(s) the policy statement continues to hold the field.
It's a support booklet which is easy to quote, but as the cwu says if there is conflicts then used the proper agreement as per the other threads.
Something we need to keep an eye on when peeps ask for help.
